S. Prince Calvin is the Bishop of Coimbatore Diocese of Church of South India. [1]
Rev. Prince Calvin holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and has received extensive theological training. He completed his Bachelor of Divinity at Union Biblical Seminary, Pune, and his Master of Theology at Tamilnadu Theological Seminary, Madurai. He also holds a Diploma in Eco-Justice Ministry from the United Theological College, Bangalore, in collaboration with Oxford University. He was ordained as Deacon on 20 June 1993 at CSI Immanuel Church, Coimbatore, and as Presbyter on 9 September 1994 at CSI Christ Church, Gandhipuram, by Rt. Rev. Dr. William Moses.
Rev. Calvin born on 21 March 1965, is married to Mrs. Ida Calvin, B.A. He comes from a family deeply rooted in Christian faith, ministry, and education. His father, Mr. D. Samuel Gnanakatcham (M.A., M.Ed.), served as a Headmaster at CSI Boys Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore, and his mother, Mrs. K. Jessie Thangam (M.A., M.Ed.), served as a Headmistress. His spiritual heritage is further enriched by his grandfathers, Rev. R. Devasirvatham, a CSI Presbyter, and Mr. Koilmani, a catechist. He is blessed with a daughter, Dr. P. Preethi Caroline (B.D.S.), son-in-law, Mr. Kithiyone Divyaraj (M.Com., C.M.A.), and grandson, Master Ryan Divyan Mathew.
His pastoral ministry spans more than three decades and reflects faithful service in both rural and urban contexts. He served at CSI Holy Trinity Church and CSI Tamil Church, Yercaud, from 1992 to 1993; CSI Immanuel Church, Sathyamangalam, from 1993 to 1995; CSI Christ Church, Annur, from 1995 to 1998; and CSI Immanuel Church, Avinashi, from 1998 to 2000. Following his M.Th. studies from 2000 to 2002, he served at CSI Tiruppur Rural Pastorate from 2002 to 2005, CSI Sowripalayam Pastorate, Coimbatore, from 2005 to 2010, CSI Christ Church, Gandhipuram, from 2010 to 2015, CSI St. Peter’s Church, Rathinapuri, from 2015 to 2020, CSI Christ Church, Police Quarters, Ganapathy, from 2020 to 2021, and CSI Immanuel Church, Coimbatore, from 2021 to 2025.
In addition to parish ministry, Rev. Prince Calvin has actively contributed to the wider life of the Church. He has attended CSI Synod Councils held at Coimbatore in 1996, Madanapalle in 1998, Courtallam in 2010, and Vijayawada in 2014. He has served twice on the synod executive committee, been a member of the working committee, and contributed to the Constitution Drafting process for the Kollam–Kottarakara Diocese. At the diocesan level, he has served as area chairman for Coimbatore from 2005 to 2009, Administrative Secretary in 2013, and as honorary secretary of the CSI Coimbatore Diocese for multiple terms. His responsibilities have also included service as correspondent and secretary for CSI schools and colleges, and as director of the Diocesan Centre for Communication.
Rev. Prince Calvin has been exposed to the global Church through visits to the Holy Land in 1996 and 2011, Seoul in 1998, Singapore, Germany in 2013, Malaysia, and Switzerland in 2018. His ministry has been marked by a commitment to mission expansion through the formation of new churches and centres at Airport Brindavan Nagar in 2008, Nehru Nagar in 2009, Mullai Nagar in 2015, and Annur in 2025. His vision for the Coimbatore Diocese emphasizes transparent administration, empowered parishes, spiritual formation, vibrant youth ministry, strengthened educational institutions, unity within the Church, and renewed mission outreach.
