Elections in Iowa |
---|
The 1912 Iowa Senate elections took place as part of the biennial 1912 United States elections. Iowa voters elected state senators in 29 of the senate's 50 districts. State senators serve four-year terms in the Iowa Senate.
A statewide map of the 50 state Senate districts in the 1912 elections is provided by the Iowa General Assembly here.
The primary election on June 3, 1912, determined which candidates appeared on the November 5, 1912 general election ballot. [1] [2]
Following the previous election, Republicans had control of the Iowa Senate with 34 seats to Democrats' 16 seats.
To claim control of the chamber from Republicans, the Democrats needed to net 10 Senate seats.
Republicans maintained control of the Iowa State Senate following the 1912 general election with the balance of power shifting to Republicans holding 32 seats and Democrats having 18 seats (a net gain of 2 seats for Democrats).

Claude Rodman Porter was an American politician and lawyer. He served in both chambers of the Iowa General Assembly and as a United States Attorney, and was a perennial Democratic Party runner-up to Republican victors in three races for governor of Iowa and six races for U.S. senator. In an era in which the Republican Party was so dominant in Iowa that Senator Jonathan P. Dolliver remarked that "Iowa will go Democratic when Hell goes Methodist," Porter twice came closer to winning the governorship than all but one other Democratic candidate of that era. He later served as a member of the U.S. Interstate Commerce Commission for eighteen years.
The 1896–97 United States Senate elections were held on various dates in various states. As these U.S. Senate elections were prior to the ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913, senators were chosen by state legislatures. Senators were elected over a wide range of time throughout 1896 and 1897, and a seat may have been filled months late or remained vacant due to legislative deadlock. In these elections, terms were up for the senators in Class 3.
The 1982 Iowa State Senate elections took place as part of the biennial 1982 United States elections. Iowa voters elected state senators in 29 of the state senate's 50 districts—all 25 of the odd-numbered seats were up for regularly-scheduled elections to four-year terms and, due to the oddities of redistricting following the 1980 Census, four of the even-numbered seats were up as well. State senators serve four-year terms in the Iowa State Senate, with half of the seats traditionally up for election each cycle.
