Philippe Madrelle was a French politician. A member of the Socialist Party, he served as a Deputy from the Gironde between 1968 and 1980, President of the General Council of Gironde between 1976 and 2015, and Senator from 1980 until his death.
Pierre Sudreau was a French politician. His childhood correspondence with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900–1944) helped inspire the title character of the 1943 novel The Little Prince.
Malik Oussekine was a French student of Algerian origin. He had been walking near student protests in Paris opposing university reforms and proposed immigration restrictions. Though uninvolved in the demonstration, Oussekine was chased by police and beaten to death. Oussekine was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, though it was later revealed that he had died at the spot of the attack. News of his killing intensified the protests, and the laws were scrapped two days later.

From late 1986 to early 1987, mass student protests and strikes across France erupted after the government attempted to sign the Devaquet bill into law. Riots and looting occurred throughout the city of Paris but spread to 3 other cities.

On 27 June 2023, Nahel Merzouk, a 17-year-old French youth of Moroccan and Algerian descent, was shot at point-blank range and killed by police officer Florian M. in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, France. Initial reporting on the incident was later contradicted by a video posted online, which led to widespread protests and riots. Symbols of the state such as town halls, schools, police stations, and other buildings were attacked. The Interior Ministry reported that more than 5,000 vehicles had been set on fire, along with 10,000 garbage cans; nearly 1,000 buildings had been burnt, damaged or looted; 250 police stations and gendarmeries had been attacked; and more than 700 police officers had been injured.
A series of riots in France began on 27 June 2023 following the fatal shooting of Nahel Merzouk in an encounter with two police officers in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris. Residents started a protest outside the police headquarters on the 27 June, which later escalated into rioting as demonstrators set cars alight, destroyed bus stops, and shot fireworks at police. In Viry-Châtillon, a town just south of Paris with a history of violence towards police, a group of teenagers set a bus ablaze.

The 2024 French protests against the far-right, also known as the anti-National Rally protests, was protests that began on 9 June 2024 in response to the National Rally (RN) party's victory in the 2024 European Parliament election and the resulting dissolution of parliament and snap elections called by French President Emmanuel Macron. Several unions and left-leaning party organizations called for demonstrations across several cities in France, as well as for creating coalitions between left-leaning and far left political parties to prevent the National Rally party from achieving victory in French parliament.
