Zhaotong Zhaoyang Airport is an under-construction airport located in Zhaoyang district of Zhaotong City in Yunnan Province of Southwestern China. It was formerly called "Zhaotong Hualuping Airport". Zhaotong Zhaoyang Airport is about to operate in 2024, replacing the existing Zhaotong Airport. [1]

The Neijiang–Kunming railway or Neikun railway, is a single-track railroad between Neijiang and Kunming in Southwest China. The line runs 872 km (542 mi) from Neijiang in Sichuan province to Kunming in Yunnan province through western Guizhou province. The Neikun Line was built in three sections. The northern section, from Neijiang to Anbian township of Yibin and 140 km (87 mi) in length, was built from 1956 to 1960. The southern section from Kunming to Meihuashan station, near Liupanshui in Guizhou, and 370 km (230 mi) in length, was built from 1960 to 1965 and became the westernmost segment of the Guiyang-Kunming railway. The middle section between Anbian and Meihuashan through Zhaotong and 358 km (222 mi) in length was built from 1998 to 2001. Major cities and towns along route include Neijiang, Zigong, Yibin, Shuifu, Zhaotong, Weining County, Xuanwei, Qujing and Kunming.

The Apostolic Prefecture of Zhaotong is an Apostolic Prefecture, of the Catholic Church with seat in the city of Zhaotong, in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan.

The 1974 Zhaotong earthquake occurred at 3:25 in the morning local time on 11 May 1974, with a Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) time of 19:25:16 on 10 May. It had a magnitude that was measured at 7.0 on the moment magnitude scale and 7.1 on the surface wave magnitude scale. It had a maximum perceived intensity of IX (Violent) on the Mercalli intensity scale. The epicenter was located in Zhaotong prefecture in Yunnan province and it caused between 1,641 and 20,000 deaths.

On 7 September 2012, a series of earthquakes occurred in Yiliang County, Zhaotong, Yunnan. The two main shocks occurred at 11:19 and 12:16 China Standard Time. The earthquakes left 81 people dead and 821 injured. According to the officials, at least 100,000 people were evacuated and more than 20,000 houses were damaged.

The 2014 Ludian earthquake struck Ludian County, Yunnan, China, with a moment magnitude of 6.1 on 3 August. The earthquake killed at least 615 people, injuring at least 2,400 others. At least 114 people remained missing. Over 12,000 houses collapsed and 30,000 were damaged. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 29 km (18 mi) west-southwest of Zhaotong city at 16:30 local time (08:30 UTC).

The Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve is a state-level nature reserve located in Dashanbao Township, Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong prefecture-level city, Yunnan Province, China. The reserve has been set up to protect a total area of 19,200 hectares of plateau marshland at altitudes between 2,200 and 3,300 meters that provide winter habitat for the Black-necked crane. The reserve has been designated as a Ramsar site since 2004.

Buga Township or Buga Hui Ethnic Township is a rural ethnic township in Zhaoyang District of Zhaotong, Yunnan, China. As of the 2015 census it had a population of 27,000 and an area of 97.4-square-kilometre (37.6 sq mi). It borders Shouwang Township and Zhongshui Township of Weining County in the east, Taoyuan Township of Ludian County in the southwest, and Yongfeng Town in the northwest.

Shouwang Township or Shouwang Hui Ethnic Township is a rural ethnic township in Zhaoyang District of Zhaotong, Yunnan, China. As of the 2015 census it had a population of 40,000. It is surrounded by Fenghuang Subdistrict on the north, Buga Hui Ethnic Township and Yongfeng Town on the west, Xiaolongdong Hui and Yi Ethnic Township on the east, and Zhongshui Town of Weining County on the south.

The 2020 Qiaojia earthquake occurred in Yunnan, China, 42 km west of Zhaotong on May 18, 21:48 local time. The moment magnitude 5.1 quake occurred at a depth of 10 km. Various buildings were damaged, and one house collapsed in Zhaoyang District. Four people were killed while 24 people were injured.
