Labocania is a genus of carnivorous theropod dinosaur of disputed affinities from the Late Cretaceous of Mexico. Initially regarded as an indeterminate theropod, later studies mentioned possible affinities with tyrannosaurids, abelisaurids, or carcharodontosaurids. More recent research based on additional fossil material found support for a position within the tyrannosaurine clade Teratophoneini. Two species have been proposed: L. anomala (the type species), likely from the La Bocana Roja Formation, and L. aguillonae from the Cerro del Pueblo Formation.

Discovery

In the summer of 1970, the National Geographic Society and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History organized a joint paleontological expedition, led by geologist William J. Morris, to the Arroyo del Rosario in Baja California, Mexico. While prospecting, volunteer Harley J. Garbani discovered the fragmentary skeleton of a theropod north of Punta Baja near Cerro Rayado. [1]

The collected specimen, IGM 5307 (formerly LACM 20877), was found in a layer of what is likely the La Bocana Roja Formation, originally thought to date from the late Campanian, about 73 million years old. More recent research has provided conflicting dates, possibly as old as around 93.6 million years old (CenomanianTuronian), [2] but vertebrate remains suggest a younger age. [3] The specimen consists of a very fragmentary skeleton with skull elements, including a right quadrate, a left frontal, a piece of the left maxilla, a fragment of the dentary, a chevron, the upper parts of both ischia, the middle shaft of the right pubis, most of the second right metatarsal, a toe bone and several loose teeth. The elements were found disarticulated and strongly weathered, dispersed over a surface of about two square meters. The remains were mixed with the ribs of a hadrosauroid. [1]

In 1974, Ralph Molnar described the type species, Labocania anomala, based on these remains. The generic name references the La Bocana Roja Formation, named after la Bocana Roja, "the red estuary". The specific name means "anomalous" in Latin, in reference to the distinctive morphology. [1]

In 2024, Rivera-Sylva & Longrich described a second species, Labocania aguillonae, based on fragmentary remains found in the Campanian-aged Cerro del Pueblo Formation of Coahuila, Mexico. The specific name honors the discoverer of the specimen, Martha C. Aguillon, a long-time paleontologist based in Coahuila. The holotype, CPC 2974, comprises parts of a maxilla, the frontals, left lacrimal, nasals, left squamosal, cervical, dorsal, sacral, and caudal vertebrae, left humerus, partial pelvic girdle, and partial left hindlimb. CPC 3077, a partial left dentary belonging to a larger, more mature individual, was tentatively referred to L. aguillonae. [3]

Labocania was a medium-sized carnivore. In 2010, Gregory S. Paul estimated the length of L. anomala at 7 metres (23 ft) and its weight at 1.5 long tons (1.7 short tons). [4] In 2016, Molina-Pérez & Larramendi gave a higher estimate of 8.2 metres (27 ft) meters long and 2.6 long tons (2.9 short tons) in weight. [5] The holotype of L. aguillonae which belongs to either a subadult or a young adult is smaller, at an estimated 6.3 metres (21 ft) long. A tentatively referred specimen belongs to a larger individual. [3]

The cranial elements are very robust, and the frontals in particular are strongly thickened. The teeth of the maxilla are gradually recurving and rather flat; those of the premaxilla do not have a D-shaped cross-section. [1]

Because Labocania is based on fragmentary material, its affinities are uncertain. Molnar (1974) noted certain similarities between Labocania and tyrannosaurids, especially in the form of the ischium which features a low triangular obturator process and a circular lateral scar on the upper end, but he did not assign Labocania to any family, placing it as Theropoda incertae sedis . Molnar especially compared Labocania with " Chilantaisaurus " maortuensis (later made the separate genus Shaochilong ) and Indosaurus . [1] Labocania was considered as a possible tyrannosauroid in the 2004 review of the group by Thomas R. Holtz Jr., who pointed out that the similarities with the Tyrannosauridae were shared with the Coelurosauria in general—no tyrannosauroid synapomorphies were present—and that Labocania also showed some abelisaurid traits such as the thick frontals and a reclining quadrate. The L-shaped chevron and the flattened outer side of the second metatarsal support a position in the Tetanurae. [6]

In 2024, Andrea Cau included L. anomala in a large-scale phylogenetic dataset and recovered it as a carcharodontosaurid forming a clade with Shaochilong. [7]

In their description of theropod material assigned to the new Labocania species L. aguillonae, Rivera-Sylva & Longrich (2024) found support for a position within the tyrannosaurine clade Teratophoneini. Their phylogenetic analyses recovered Labocania in a clade with Bistahieversor , Dynamoterror , Teratophoneus , and two unnamed taxa from the Aguja and Two Medicine formations. Carcharodontosauridae is a group of carnivorous theropod dinosaurs. In 1931, Ernst Stromer named Carcharodontosauridae as a family, which, in modern paleontology, indicates a clade within Carnosauria. Carcharodontosaurids include some of the largest land predators ever known: Giganotosaurus, Mapusaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, and Tyrannotitan all rivaled Tyrannosaurus in size. Estimates give a maximum weight of 8–10 metric tons for the largest carcharodontosaurids, while the smallest carcharodontosaurids were estimated to have weighed at least 500 kilograms (1,100 lb).

<i>Eocarcharia</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Eocarcharia is a genus of carcharodontosaurid theropod dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Elrhaz Formation that lived in the Sahara 112 million years ago, in what today is the country of Niger. It was discovered in 2000 on an expedition led by University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno. The type and only species is Eocarcharia dinops. Its teeth were shaped like blades and were used for disabling live prey and ripping apart body parts. Eocarcharia's brow is swollen into a massive band of bone, giving it a menacing glare. It may have reached lengths of 6–8 m (19.7–26.2 ft).

La Bocana Roja Formation is a geological formation in Baja California, Mexico whose strata date back to the Late Cretaceous, although the precise age is unclear. Dinosaur remains are among the fossils that have been recovered from the formation.

<i>Shaochilong</i> Extinct genus of dinosaurs

Shaochilong is an extinct genus of tetanuran theropod dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Miaogou Formation of China, though a more restrictive suggestion from the Aptian to the Albian has been suggested based off faunal composition. It was originally described as a carcharodontosaurid, but other phylogenies have suggested a different position as a tyrannosauroid. The type species, S. maortuensis, was originally named Chilantaisaurus maortuensis, but was re-described and reclassified in 2009.

The holotype and a juvenile were found in the Hunter Wash Member of the Kirtland Formation, while other specimens came from the underlying Fossil Forest member of the Fruitland Formation. This dates Bistahieversor approximately 75.5 to 74.5 million years ago during the Campanian age, found in sediments spanning a million years.

<i>Qiupalong</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Qiupalong is an extinct genus of ornithomimosaurian theropod that was discovered in the Late Cretaceous Qiupa Formation of Henan, China. The genus contains a single species, Q. henanensis, the specific epithet for which was named for the province of Henan. Uniquely, Qiupalong is one of the few Late Cretaceous non-avian dinosaurs known from both Asia and Laramidia. Specimens from Russia and Alberta have been referred to the genus without being assigned to the type species.

Teratophoneus is a genus of tyrannosaurine theropod dinosaur that lived during the late Campanian age of the Late Cretaceous period, in what is now Utah. It contains a single known species, T. curriei. It is known from an incomplete skull and postcranial skeleton recovered from the Kaiparowits Formation and was specifically named T. curriei in honor of famed paleontologist Philip J. Currie.

Dynamoterror is a monospecific genus of tyrannosaurid dinosaur from New Mexico that lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now the upper Allison Member of the Menefee Formation. The type and only species, Dynamoterror dynastes, is known from a subadult or adult individual about 9 metres long with an incomplete associated skeleton. It was named in 2018 by Andrew T. McDonald, Douglas G. Wolfe and Alton C. Dooley, Jr. Dynamoterror was closely related to Teratophoneus and Lythronax.

<i>Leptorhynchos gaddisi</i> Extinct species of dinosaur

Leptorhynchos is an extinct genus of caenagnathid theropod from the Late Cretaceous of what is now the US state of Texas, although it has been suggested to also exist in Alberta and South Dakota. The type species is L. gaddisi, and it is currently the only widely accepted valid species. The generic name of Leptorhynchos comes from the Greek "leptos" meaning "small" and "rhynchos" meaning "beak". The specific epithet is in honor of the Gaddis family, who owned the land on which the holotype was discovered.

Tralkasaurus is a genus of abelisaurid dinosaur from the Huincul Formation from Río Negro Province in Argentina. The type and only species is Tralkasaurus cuyi, named in 2020 by Mauricio Cerroni and colleagues based on an incomplete skeleton. A medium-sized abelisaurid, Tralkasaurus exhibits a conflicting blend of characteristics found among the early-diverging abelisauroids with others that characterize the highly specialized clade Brachyrostra, and thus its position within the clade is poorly-resolved.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Daspletosaurini</span> Extinct clade of tyrannosaurid dinosaurs

Daspletosaurini is an extinct clade (tribe) of tyrannosaurine dinosaurs that lived in Laramidia during the Late Cretaceous period. It consists of two genera: Daspletosaurus and Thanatotheristes. Four species have been described in the two genera, namely Daspletosaurus torosus, Daspletosaurus horneri, Daspletosaurus wilsoni, and Thanatotheristes degrootorum. At one point all of them were assigned as specimens of D. torosus, but several papers since 2017 have found them to represent distinct species. Some researchers found anagenesis in the group, whether contained in a daspletosaurin clade or paraphyletic in respect to the lineage of tyrannosaurines leading up to Tyrannosaurus, but a 2023 study refuted this theory on the basis of morphological and stratigraphical data.

<i>Coahuilasaurus</i> Extinct genus of ornithopod dinosaurs

Coahuilasaurus is an extinct genus of kritosaurin ornithopod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) Cerro del Pueblo Formation of Coahuila, Mexico. The genus contains a single species, C. lipani, known from the associated tips of the upper and lower jaw and other fragmentary skull bones. It is a large kritosaurin with an estimated body length of 8 metres (26 ft).
