Vexillology is the study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags or, by extension, any interest in flags in general. The word is a synthesis of the Latin word vexillum and the Greek suffix -logia ("study"). The first known usage of the word vexillology was in 1959.
Flags of the World is an Internet-based vexillological association and resource. Its principal project is the Internet's largest website devoted to vexillology, containing comprehensive information about various flags, and an associated mailing list. The mailing list began as a discussion group in about September 1993, while the website was founded by Giuseppe Bottasini in late 1994, and Rob Raeside took over as director in 1998. Flags of the World became the 56th member of the FIAV in 2001.
True South is the only flag of Antarctica formally recognized by members of the Antarctic Treaty System, the condominium that governs the continent. However, adoption of the flag is not yet universal, and dozens of unofficial designs have also been proposed.
The North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) is a membership organization devoted to vexillology, the scientific and scholarly study of flags. It was founded in 1967 by American vexillologist Whitney Smith (1940–2016), and others. Its membership of 600+ comprises flag scholars, enthusiasts, designers, collectors, conservators, educators, merchants, manufacturers, historians, and hobbyists.
A banner of arms is a type of heraldic flag which has the same image as a coat of arms, i.e. the shield of a full heraldic achievement, rendered in a square or rectangular shape of the flag.
The galleries below show flags attributed to the eighteen regions, five overseas collectivities, one sui generis collectivity and one overseas territory of France. Most of them are both non-official and traditional as regions often use their logos as a flag though some regions used the banner of arms as official flags.
The International Federation of Vexillological Associations is an international federation of 51 regional, national, and multinational associations and institutions across the globe that study vexillology, which FIAV defines in its constitution as "the creation and development of a body of knowledge about flags of all types, their forms and functions, and of scientific theories and principles based on that knowledge."
The Nordic Flag Society is an association of Nordic vexillologists. It has an official name in the languages of all the five countries in which its activities are principally based: Nordiska Flaggsällskapet (Swedish), Nordisk Flagselskab (Danish), Nordisk Flaggselskap (Norwegian), Pohjoismaiden Lippuseura (Finnish), and Norræna Fánafélagið (Icelandic). Founded in Copenhagen on 27. January 1973, the Nordic Flag Society is dedicated to the study of flags and promotion of vexillology in Scandinavia.
The Sociedad Española de Vexilología is an association devoted to the study of flags. Based in Spain, most of its members are Spanish-speaking vexillologists. Founded on 31 October 1977, the Spanish Society of Vexillology is a member of the Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques (FIAV) since 1979. In 1985 the Spanish Society of Vexillology hosted the XI International Congress of Vexillology with Madrid as the venue.

The Société française de vexillologie, or SFV, is a free, non-profit association of vexillology and heraldry enthusiasts of France. The centre aims principally at promoting the study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags, and preserving related documents. It was founded in 1985 in Paris and is a FIAV member since 1991.
