Old Ottawa East or just Ottawa East (Vieil Ottawa Est in French) is a neighbourhood in Capital Ward in central Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located south of Nicholas Street and between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, with Avenue Road marking the southern border. [1] To the south is the neighbourhood of Old Ottawa South and to the northeast is Sandy Hill. [2] Old Ottawa East includes the Lees Avenue area. The Flora Footbridge, which opened to pedestrians in 2019, connects the community to The Glebe. [3]
According to the Canada 2011 Census, the population of the neighbourhood was 7,279. [4]
This small neighbourhood was originally the suburban community of Archville that was incorporated as the village of Ottawa East in 1888. [5] In 1907 it was amalgamated with the growing community of Ottawa. [6] Running through the centre of the neighbourhood is Main Street, which was the central road of Archville, but which is not particularly central to modern Ottawa.[ citation needed ] The neighbourhood is home to Saint Paul University, Lady Evelyn Alternative School, Au Coeur d'Ottawa elementary school, the central campus of St. Nicholas Adult High School, and Immaculata High School. The centre of the neighbourhood is home to Greystone Village, a housing development that has been met with some objection by neighbourhood residents. [12] [13] The southern part of the neighbourhood is sometimes referred to as Rideau Gardens. [2]
The Cuban embassy is located in the neighbourhood, along Main Street. [14]
As an independent village, Ottawa East elected a reeve (similar to a mayor) to head a village council from 1888 to 1907. [5] The reeves of the village were as follows:
The Glebe is a neighbourhood in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located just south of Downtown Ottawa in the Capital Ward. As of 2016, the neighbourhood had a population of 13,055.
Rockcliffe Park is a neighbourhood in Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward, close to the centre of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1864, organized as a Police village in 1908, and an independent village from 1926, and ultimately amalgamated with the rest of Ottawa on January 1, 2001. As of 2011, it had a population of 2,021. In 1977 the entire village of Rockcliffe Park was designated a Heritage Conservation District. Rockcliffe Park is one of only a handful of surviving nineteenth-century communities of its kind in North America.

Old Ottawa South is an older urban neighbourhood in Capital Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Old Ottawa South is a relatively small and compact neighbourhood, located between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River. The eastern boundary is Avenue Road. Bronson Avenue forms the western border of the residential neighbourhood. Carleton University is on the other (western) side of Bronson but the campus can be considered to be geographically within Old Ottawa South as the campus is also nestled between the river and the canal.
Barrhaven is a suburb of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located about 17 km (11 mi) southwest of the city's downtown core. Prior to amalgamation with Ottawa in 2001, Barrhaven was part of the City of Nepean. Its population as of the Canada 2021 Census was 103,234.

It is currently located along the Rideau Canal in Old Ottawa East neighbourhood of Ottawa. Like other Catholic schools, it is publicly funded under the Ontario school system.
Lees Avenue is both a road and a neighbourhood in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The area lies in the narrow stretch between the Rideau Canal and Rideau River south of Sandy Hill and the Queensway and is part of Old Ottawa East. The neighbourhood is dominated by five large apartment buildings, some of the largest in Ottawa. These buildings range from low cost to moderate cost and mostly house new immigrants, students and young professionals. Across the Rideau River to the east Hurdman is a more recently built such area.
Alta Vista is a neighbourhood in Alta Vista Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Its boundaries according to the Alta Vista Community Association are that part of Alta Vista Ward south of Smyth Road in the north, north of Walkley Road and east of the Rideau River, and west of the "greenspace underneath Haig Drive". However, the name is ambiguous, as there are several sub-neighbourhoods in this area,, as the neighbourhood could refer to the ward as a whole, down to the core Alta Vista area,, centred on Alta Vista Drive.
Lower Town (also spelled "Lowertown" is a neighbourhood in Rideau-Vanier Ward in central Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to the east of downtown. It is the oldest part of the city. It is bounded by Rideau Street to the south, the Ottawa River to the west and north and the Rideau River to the east. It includes the commercial Byward Market area in the south-western part, and is predominantly residential in the north and east.
Manor Park is a neighbourhood in Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward in the east end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on the east side of Rockcliffe Park.

W. E. Noffke (1878–1964) was an architect in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, best known for his residential works. His houses, some of the grandest in the city of the time, are designed in a large variety of styles, most in an eclectic style, often with Mediterranean influences. Most of his extant houses are in the Glebe neighbourhood, specifically the Clemow Development. The other major location for his residential buildings includes Sandy Hill with many others in smaller neighbourhoods around the city of Ottawa.
Carleton Heights is a neighbourhood in River Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. According to the Carleton Heights and Area Community Association, the neighbourhood is bounded on the north by the Central Experimental Farm, on the east by the Rideau River, on the south by the junction of Prince of Wales Drive and Fisher Avenue and on the west by Fisher Avenue. The neighbourhood is sometimes referred to as Hog's Back after the nearby falls. The total population of the neighbourhood is 7,586 according to the Canada 2016 Census.
Forbes is a neighbourhood in Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward in the east end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Centretown is a neighbourhood in Somerset Ward, in central Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is defined by the city as "the area bounded on the north by Gloucester Street and Lisgar Street, on the east by the Rideau Canal, on the south by the Queensway freeway and on the west by Bronson Avenue." Traditionally it was all of Ottawa west of the Rideau Canal, while Lower Town was everything to the east. For certain purposes, such as the census and real estate listings, the Golden Triangle and/or Downtown Ottawa is included in Centretown and it is considered part of Centretown by the Centretown Citizens Community Association as well as being used in this way in casual conversation.
The Flora Footbridge, named after Flora MacDonald, is a pedestrian/cycling bridge in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, that spans the Rideau Canal, connecting Clegg Street in Old Ottawa East to Fifth Avenue in the Glebe. It also crosses Colonel By Drive.
