Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.(旭硝子株式会社,Asahi Garasu Kabushiki-gaisha), more commonly known as AGC, is a Japanese global glass manufacturing company, headquartered in Tokyo. It is the largest glass company in the world and one of the core Mitsubishi companies.

Tokyo Stock Price Index (東証株価指数), commonly known as TOPIX, along with the Nikkei 225, is an important stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) in Japan, tracking all domestic companies of the exchange's First Section. It is calculated and published by the TSE. As of 1 February 2011, there are 1,669 companies listed on the First Section of the TSE, and the market value for the index was ¥197.4 trillion.

Nikkei 225 Japanese stock market index

The Nikkei 225, more commonly called the Nikkei, the Nikkei index, or the Nikkei Stock Average, is a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). It has been calculated daily by the Nihon Keizai Shinbun newspaper since 1950. It is a price-weighted index, operating in the Japanese Yen (JP¥), and its components are reviewed once a year. Currently, the Nikkei is the most widely quoted average of Japanese equities, similar to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Indeed, it was known as the 'Nikkei Dow Jones Stock Average' from 1975 to 1978. The Nikkei measures the performance of 225 large, publicly-owned companies in Japan from a wide array of industry sectors.

Overview

Asahi Glass was founded on 8 September 1907 by Toshiya Iwasaki, the second son of the second president of the original Mitsubishi zaibatsu. It was the first Japanese producer of sheet glass. Asahi Glass Co. is one of the largest flat glass producing companies in the world, owning Glaverbel glass plants across Europe and AFG Industries in North America.[ citation needed ] It purchased AFG Industries in 1992. [7]

Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) is a fluorine-based plastic. It was designed to have high corrosion resistance and strength over a wide temperature range. ETFE is a polymer and its source-based name is poly(ethene-co-tetrafluoroethene). ETFE has a relatively high melting temperature, excellent chemical, electrical and high-energy radiation resistance properties. When burned, ETFE releases hydrofluoric acid.

Price-fixing scandal in Europe

AGC Flat Glass Europe was one of the four flat-glass manufacturers involved in the 2007 price fixing scandal uncovered by the EU Competition Commission. The European Commission said that the firms had raised or stabilised prices in 2004 and 2005 through illicit contacts. [8] Neelie Kroes, the EU's competition commissioner, said that the EU would "not tolerate companies cheating consumers and business customers by fixing prices and depriving them of the benefits of the single market". [9]

Asahi India Glass Ltd. is jointly promoted by Asahi Glass Co.Ltd. (AGC), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) and B. M Labroo & Associates. Incorporated in 1984, the Company has grown from being a ‘single-plant single-customer’ company to a glass company with 12 plants and customers spanning across India. PT Asahimas Flat Glass Tbk

In 1970s, Asahi Glass Co. Ltd. was searching for a new overseas production base after Thailand. In Indonesia, it found a joint partner PT Rodamas, a merchant company turned consumer and industrial product manufacturer. Both established Asahimas Flat Glass in April 1973. It produced simple clear glass using the traditional Fourcault Process. The company product line was quickly diversified to include products such as Specialty Glass, History Safety Glass, Reflective Glass and Mirror. These days, Asahimas increases an aggregate installed production capacity of 570,000 tons for Flat Glass, 4,500,000 square meters for Safety Glass and 2,400,000 square meters for mirror. This annual capacity ranks Asahimas as the largest glass manufacturer in both Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Ownership (2014): [10]

Asahi India Glass Limited, known as AIS, is a glass solutions and manufacturing company in India. It was established in 1984. It manufactures automotive safety glass, float glass, architectural processed glass, and glass products. It also provides consumer glass offerings in the form of Glasxperts and Windshield Experts. AIS was established as a Joint Venture agreement between the Labroo family, Asahi Glass Co. Ltd., Japan, and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. In the Indian passenger car glass segment, AIS has 77.1% market share as of 2017. AIS also holds 20% market share in India’s architectural glass segment as of 2017.
