James Richard Leininger (born 1944) is an American physician, businessman and conservative and Christian activist from San Antonio, Texas. [1]

Early life and education

Leininger was born in Warsaw, Indiana, in 1944, and grew up in Indiana and Florida. He attended Indiana University Indianapolis, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 and an Doctor of Medicine in 1969. [2] [3]

He completed a two-year internship at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami in Miami, and then post-graduate courses at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, D.C., and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where he also lectured. Career

Leininger later settled in San Antonio, where he taught at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1972 and 1973. [2] [4]

In 1976, Leininger founded Kinetic Concepts, a global medical technology corporation, where he later served as chairman emeritus. [3] [4] [5] One of his Kinetic Concepts employees, Susan Weddington of San Antonio, was the state chairman of the Republican Party of Texas from 1997 to 2003. [6]

His other business ventures include the private venture investment firm MedCare Investment Funds in 1991, the co-founding of ATX Technologies in 1994, where he later served on its board of directors, and co-founding the Renal Care Group in 1995. [3] [5] He served as director for the Emergency Department of the Baptist Health System in San Antonio from 1975 to 1985 and on the board of directors for Texas Commerce Bank from 1985 to 1991. [7] He currently sits on the boards of BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals and Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

Leininger has invested in Texas real estate and food companies, including Promised Land Foods, Sunday House Foods, Seafood Wholesalers of Houston, and Plantation Seafood Co. [4] He owns the direct mail firm Focus Direct, Inc. and the television station Mission City Television, Inc. [4] He is a part-owner of the San Antonio Spurs. [4]

He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Institute of American Entrepreneurs. [7] In 2007, he was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame. [8]

Political activism

Leininger founded Texans for Justice in 1988, the Texas Public Policy Foundation in 1989, a think tank which supports climate change deniability, [9] and opposes the shift to sustainable mobility. [10] Leininger has also been involved with Texans for Governmental Integrity. [4] [11] [12] He supported Thomas R. Phillips' campaign for Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court and made significant donations to George W. Bush when he was governor of Texas), former Governor Rick Perry, and the state Republican Party. [4] [11] [12] [13] [14]

Christian activism

Leininger is a self-described devout Christian and has been described as "an extremist" by his political opponents, a label which he describes as being "a sad commentary on where politics is today." Tex Lezar, a 1994 Republican nominee for Texas lieutenant governor, has said of Leininger that "[h]e believes in putting his time, effort and money behind things he believes in[.] . . . I've never sensed an ulterior motive for Jim. It's all philosophical." [4]

Leininger sits on the board of Patrick Henry College, founded in Virginia by the conservative activist Michael Farris. [15] A proponent of school vouchers, Leininger launched CEO San Antonio to award vouchers to children from modest backgrounds. [4] [11] [13] [16] He also sits on the board of directors of CEO America, another school voucher organization. [4] He is a former board member of the Carver Academy. [7] He owns the copyright for The Beginner's Bible, as well. [17]

He sat on the advisory board of the Institute in Basic Life Principles. [18]

Philanthropy

In addition to political contributions, Leininger supports a range of charitable initiatives in education, humanitarian aid, and scientific research. In 1997, he reportedly donated $1.5 million to Vanderbilt University, $2.5 million to Vision Forum, $3 million to the University of Miami, and $300,000 for diabetes research to the University of Texas Medical Center. [4] Other recipients include Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, the Mental Health Association, YMCA, The Miracle Foundation, and orphanages in Africa, Central America, Haiti, India, Myanmar, Romania, Russia, Thailand, and Ukraine. [19]

Personal life

Married in 1976, Leininger and his wife, Cecelia, have four children and five grandchildren. [2]

Steiger, who sought intellectual support for his education reform ideas, including public school vouchers. Projects of the organization include Right on Crime, which is focused on criminal justice reform, and Fueling Freedom, which seeks to "explain the forgotten moral case for fossil fuels" by rejecting the scientific consensus on climate change.

The News of Texas is a statewide newscast in Texas that was syndicated to 27 affiliate stations in the state by the San Antonio-based Texas Network (TXN) between January 18, 1999, and July 31, 2000. TXN was founded by James R. Leininger, a San Antonio physician and conservative political donor, and Bob Rogers, a longtime San Antonio news executive. The program provided in-depth news and feature coverage focusing on Texas issues. However, it expanded quickly and faced difficulty attracting viewers in large markets in the state. Unable to accrue advertising revenue, TXN shut down in 2000.

Mary Eleanor Brackenridge was one of three women on the first board of regents at Texas Woman's University, the first women in the state of Texas to sit on a governing board of any university. She was active in women's clubs and was a co-founder of the Woman's Club of San Antonio. Brackenridge was a leader in Texas suffrage organizations and helped get the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution passed. She was the first woman in San Antonio to register to vote. Although it's the Brackenridge name in Texas that is associated with wealth, philanthropy and achievement, Brackenridge qualified as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution through her mother's lineage. Miss Brackenridge was a founding member and the first Regent of the oldest DAR chapter in San Antonio, the San Antonio de Bexar Chapter, established on December 11, 1902.

John Thomas Steen Jr., is a lawyer from San Antonio, Texas, who served as the Texas Secretary of State from 2012 to 2014. Steen was appointed by Governor Rick Perry on November 27, 2012, after Esperanza Andrade resigned four days earlier from the position that she had held for more than four years. Steen is Texas' 108th Secretary of State and one of six officials to have formed the Executive Department of state government.

The primary for all parties was held on March 6, 2018, making it the first primary of the 2018 season. As Cruz and O'Rourke both won majorities in their primaries, they did not participate in the May 22 runoff primary that was held for some nominations in Texas.

Stephen Philip Allison is a Texas politician representing District 121 in the Texas House of Representatives.
