The 2022 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held on 18 June 2022, in Ekiti State, and on 16 July 2022, in Osun State. [1] The last regular gubernatorial elections for both states were in 2018. Before the elections, the All Progressives Congress held both offices with Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi being term-limited after serving his second nonconsecutive term and Osun Governor Gboyega Oyetola running for a second term with his party's nomination. In the post-elections situation, the APC held Ekiti with a victory for former Secretary to the State Government Abiodun Oyebanji but lost Osun as Oyetola was defeated by former Senator Ademola Adeleke—the nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi (APC) was re-elected to a second nonconsecutive term in 2018 with 51.34% of the vote. He was term-limited in 2022, and was therefore unable to seek re-election for a third term. Eight APC candidates competed for the party's nomination, although seven of the aspirants withdrew on the day of the primary in protest of the process' alleged bias towards the eventual winner, Abiodun Oyebanji (former Secretary to the State Government). Later on 27 January, official results were announced with Oyebanji defeating Kayode Ojo (businessman) and Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (Senator for Ekiti Central, former House of Representatives member, and former Lagos State cabinet official) along with the five other withdrawn candidates by over 100,000 votes in a direct primary. [2]

Of the PDP candidates, Bisi Kolawole (former Ekiti State PDP Chairman, former Commissioner for Environment, and former House of Assembly member) emerged victorious over former Governor Olusegun Oni and former Deputy Governor Kolapo Olushola after Kolawole's main opponent Ekiti South Senator Abiodun Olujimi withdrew in protest of the primary's alleged bias. Kolawole defeated Oni, Olushola, Adewale Aribisala (former House of Representatives member and PDP National Treasurer), and Kayode Adaramodu (banker) along with other aspirants by over 300 votes in an indirect primary on 26 January. [3] However, Oni rejected the primary results before defecting to the SDP and obtaining its nomination.

The general election was noted by its great logistical organisation and peaceful voting, despite a turbulent campaign period marked by several notable interparty clashes. By the early morning of 19 June, collation completed and INEC declared Oyebanji as the victor. In total, Oyebanji obtained about 187,000 votes and 53% of the vote as runner-up Oni received around 82,000 votes and 23% of the vote while Kolawole came third with over 67,000 votes and 19% of the vote. [4] Electoral analysis focused on the impact of the ruinous divides within the state PDP compared to the state APC's post-primary reconciliation along with the draw of Oni's candidacy. [5] Civil society and election observer groups concentrated on instances of vote-buying along the highly successful election administration by INEC which resulted in smooth voting, direct online transmission of results, and one of the earliest winner declarations in recent Nigerian history as the result was announced on the night of the election. [6]

Incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola (APC) was elected to a first term in 2018 and sought reelection for a second and final term. Former House of Representatives member for Irepodun/Olurunda/Osogbo/Orolu and 2018 APC gubernatorial candidate Yusuf Sulaimon Lasun along with former Secretary to the State Government Moshood Adeoti attempted to unseat Oyetola in the APC primary but were defeated by over 200,000 votes on 19 February. [8]

For the PDP, six candidates purchased nomination forms, however, four dropped out prior to the primary and on primary date, two separate primaries were held that gave different results. The primary backed by former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola nominated Dotun Babayemi (2019 ADP Osun West senatorial nominee and son of former Olufi of Gbongan Solomon Oyewole Babayemi) but the primary that nominated Ademola Adeleke (former Senator for Osun West and 2018 PDP gubernatorial nominee) was recognized by the national PDP. As the latter was observed by INEC, Adeleke became the legitimate PDP nominee.

The general election was noted by solid logistical organisation and mainly peaceful voting but was marred by reports of vote buying. By the early morning of 17 July, collation completed and the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Adeleke as the winner. [9] In total, Adeleke won over 400,000 votes and 50% of the vote as runner-up Oyetola received around 375,000 votes and over 46% of the vote. Electoral analysis focused on the effect of the divisions within the state APC along with the election's national impact as the final election before the presidential election in 2023. [10] [11] Civil society and election observer groups concentrated on the vote-buying reports but commended the highly successful election administration by INEC which resulted in smooth voting, direct online transmission of results, and an early winner declaration. Olusegun Oni, also known as Segun Oni, is a Nigerian politician and a former Governor of Ekiti State between 29 May 2007 and 14 October 2010. He was a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). In 2014 he defected from the PDP and joined the newly formed opposition party All Progressive Congress (APC) where He was given the position of Deputy National Chairman South from 2014–2020.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Nigeria, along with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Founded on 6 February 2013 from a merger of Nigeria's three largest opposition parties, the party came to power following the victory of party candidate Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election. This marked the first time in Nigerian history that an opposition party unseated a governing party and power was transferred peacefully.

Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke is a Nigerian politician and businessman. He was a senator that represented the Osun-west senatorial district between 2017 and 2019. He is from the Adeleke family of Ede in Osun State. He contested the 2022 Osun State gubernatorial election and defeated incumbent governor, Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola who defeated him in the 2018 Osun State gubernatorial election rerun.

2018 Osun State gubernatorial election

The Osun State gubernatorial election took place on 22 September 2018. The election was held alone where national and state level elections were to be held by 2019. Two-term incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress was in-eligible to run for re-election. Ademola Adeleke of the People's Democratic Party won the initial election as announced by INEC. but was defeated in a rerun on 27 September by Gboyega Oyetola.

Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola is a Nigerian politician and Governor of Osun State. He contested the Osun State gubernatorial election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 22 September 2018 gubernatorial election and he won. On 23 March 2019 Tribunal declared him to have not been legally returned and orders INEC to issue certificates of return to Senator Adeleke of the PDP which is expected to be contested at the Court of Appeal Prior to his winning the election, he was the Chief of Staff to Rauf Aregbesola, his predecessor.

The 2019 Kaduna State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019. APC candidate Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai defeated main opposition party PDP's candidate, Isah Ashiru, to emerge winner of the contest. APC was said to have won 14 LGAs, PDP nine.

The 2018 Ekiti State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 14 July 2018. APC Governor Kayode Fayemi who ruled from 2010 to 2014 won re-election for a second term, defeating Kolapo Olushola of the PDP.

The 2015 Ogun State gubernatorial election occurred on April 11, 2015. Incumbent Governor APC's Ibikunle Amosun won election for a second term, defeating PDP's Adegboyega Isiaka and several minor party candidates. Amosun received 60.38% of the vote.

The 2014 Ekiti State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 21 June 2014, the PDP nominee Ayo Fayose won election, defeating Kayode Fayemi of the APC.

The 2014 Osun State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 9 August 2014, the APC nominee Rauf Aregbesola won re-election, defeating Iyiola Omisore of the PDP.

The 2012 Ondo State gubernatorial election occurred on October 20, 2012. Incumbent governor, LP's Olusegun Mimiko won election for a second term, defeating other party candidates. Mimiko received 43.79% of the total vote and won in 13 of the state's 18 LGAs, closely followed by PDP's Olusola Oke who won in two LGAs with 26.25% of total votes, while the ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, who won in three LGAs came third with 24.15% of the votes. Mimiko becomes the first Incumbent governor of Ondo State to be re-elected.

The 2009 Ekiti State gubernatorial election was held on 25 April 2009. It was, however, not until 5 May 2009, that the exercise was concluded due to electoral violence. Incumbent PDP Governor Segun Oni won re-election in the supplementary election, defeating AC Kayode Fayemi candidate to emerge winner.

Incumbent APC Governor Kayode Fayemi was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term. Former Secretary to the State Government Abiodun Oyebanji held the office for the APC by a 30% margin over first runner-up and SDP nominee—former Governor Olusegun Oni.

The 2022 Osun State gubernatorial election took place on 16 July 2022, to elect the governor of Osun State. Incumbent All Progressives Congress Governor Gboyega Oyetola was eligible for re-election and was renominated by his party but lost by a 3.5% margin to former Senator Ademola Adeleke—the nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election will take place on 11 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Lagos State, concurrent with elections to the Lagos State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election will be held two weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is eligible to run for re-election and has been renominated by his party.

The 2023 Ogun State gubernatorial election will take place on 11 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Ogun State, concurrent with elections to the Ogun State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election will be held two weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Dapo Abiodun is eligible to run for re-election and has been renominated by his party.

The 2022 Nigerian elections will be held throughout 2022. During the year, the governors of Ekiti and Osun states will be elected on 18 June and 16 July, respectively. Additionally, there will also be elections to fill vacant seats in the House of Representatives and state houses of assembly along with local elections in Adamawa State, Benue State, Edo State, Enugu State, the Federal Capital Territory, Imo State, Katsina State, and Kebbi State.

Abiodun Ayobami Oyebanji, is a Nigerian politician who is a former Secretary to the Ekiti State Government, former Chief of Staff and current Governor-elect of Ekiti State.
