A special election is scheduled to be held in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania to elect a new member for District 35 in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, representing the cities of Clairton, Duquesne, and McKeesport, located within the Greater Pittsburgh area. [1] The election will fill a vacancy caused by the death of Democratic representative Matthew Gergely on January 19, 2025. The vacancy caused the state house to be evenly split 101-101 between Republicans and Democrats, so this special election will decide party control of the state house until another vacancy arises. [2]
House District 35 was represented by Democrat Matthew Gergely for two years, from a special election in February 2023 until his death on January 19, 2025. Gergely won his first special election with 73.7 percent of the vote, and won re-election in 2024 unopposed with 95.4 percent of the vote. The last regularly-scheduled contested election in District 35 was in 2022, which was won by Austin Davis with 65.9 percent of the vote, who was simultaneously elected lieutenant governor in the 2022 gubernatorial election, causing the vacancy filled by Gergely.
As of February 24, 2025, Democrats have a heavy party affiliation advantage in House District 35, with 26,168 registered Democrats comprising 60.8 percent of the district's 43,076 registered voters. Only 10,673 voters, or 24.8 percent, are registered Republicans. [3]
Parties and candidates had until February 3, 2025, to submit names for the ballot. The following candidates will appear on the general election ballot:
