The chiefdoms of Sierra Leone are the third-level units of administration in Sierra Leone. There are 190 chiefdoms in Sierra Leone, as of 2017. Previously, there were 149.
The paramount chiefs and the ruling families in the chiefdoms were recognised and empowered by the British colonial administration when it organised the Protectorate of Sierra Leone in 1896.Typically, chiefs have the power to "raise taxes, control the judicial system, and allocate land, the most important resource in rural areas."
The hereditary paramount chiefs and their sub-chiefs were the sole local government in Sierra Leone until 2004, when the World Bank sponsored the creation of elected local councils. Local notables, known as the Tribal Authority, elect paramount chiefs for life from among the ruling families in each chieftaincy recognised by the British administration in 1896.
Some chieftaincies have several ruling families, and the differences among them in terms of economic progress has been subject to study in 2013.They found there was a positive relationship between the number of ruling families in a chieftaincy and educational, health and economic outcomes in terms of human capital.

Julius Maada Bio is a Sierra Leonean politician, and the current president of Sierra Leone since April 4, 2018. He is a retired brigadier general in the Sierra Leone Army and was the military head of state of Sierra Leone from January 16, 1996, to March 29, 1996, in a military Junta government known as the NPRC. As the candidate of the main opposition Sierra Leone People's Party, Bio defeated Samura Kamara of the ruling All People's Congress in the runoff vote of the 2018 Sierra Leone presidential election with 51.8% of the votes to Kamara's 48.2%. International and local observers declared the election free and fair. Bio succeeded Ernest Bai Koroma as president. As the main opposition leader, Bio was a critic of his predecessor president Ernest Bai Koroma and his administration. As president, Bio has overturned most of the policies of Ernest Bai Koroma, whom he accuses of corruption, and the two men rarely speak to each other.
Brigadier David Lansana was the first indigenous Force Commander of the Sierra Leone Military during the colonial era. After Sierra Leone became independent, he served as Military Attaché to the United States.

Paramount Chief Ella Koblo Gulama OBE, GCOR was a Sierra Leonean paramount chief and politician. In 1957, she became the first elected female Member of Parliament in Sierra Leone. She was re-elected in 1962. During the government of Milton Margai, Gulama became Sierra Leone and sub-Saharan Africa's first female Cabinet Minister.

Tihun is a small rural town in Sogbini Chiefdom, Bonthe District in the Southern Province of Sierra Leone. Tihun is the chieftaincy seat of Sogbini Chiefdom and is about ten miles to the main commercial town of Mattru Jong. The major economic activity in Tihun is farming. Tihun is the native home of the Sherbro people who are the vast majority in the town.

In 2018, the ministry of youth affairs elect Mr Anthony Bockarie as a chairman for the chiefdom youth council, he is been called as the youngest chairman among all in the class of 2018 to 2013 coming as per a mandatory to face other election.

The area of Niawa Lenga Chiefdom includes 241 km2, derived from geospatial data. The neighbour chiefdoms of Niawa Lenga are: Valunia (north), Komboya (northeast), Bagbwe (east), Kakua (south) and Selenga (west).
