Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University (ISc-BHU) is a constituent institute of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India which offers courses in Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Computer science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Geology, Geophysics, Chemistry, Statistics. [1] [2]
Faculty of Science was established in 1916 and in the month of December 2015 it was upgraded to Institute of Science. [1] [3]
Institute of Science's administrative head is a director. The director is responsible for all aspects of the Institute's operations, including budgets, administration, planning, support services, institute appointments, curricula and student affairs. The director is appointed by an executive body and reports to the vice-chancellor of the university. The Institute of Science keeps itself alive with regular academic activities like seminars, workshops, conferences. It is equipped with advanced and sophisticated laboratories. Faculty members have liaison with research institutions of repute in India and abroad. [2] A large number of the teachers of the Institute have received distinctions and honors like Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship, FICCI Award, TIFR Fellowship etc. and several are fellows of the various academies. The Institute is currently headed at the director level by Sanjay Kumar, and previously by Anil Kumar Tripathi. [4] [5] Sukh Mahendra Singh is the Dean of the faculty of science. [6] [7]
There are six Centers and thirteen different Departments of which many are centres of advanced study and research in the Institute of Science that offer Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) and Doctoral Degrees in all the field of modern science. [1]
The institute offers Undergraduate (B.Sc), Post graduate (M.Sc) and Newly added BCA course, Ph.D courses [8] in various courses under the departments and centres in the institute. Also, it offers M.Sc. (tech) in Geophysics and MCA as well.

The Journal of Scientific Research of the Banaras Hindu University is an open-access scientific journal. It is published since 1950 by the Institute of Science and is double-blind peer reviewed. [13] [14]
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a collegiate, central, and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, and founded in 1916. The university incorporated the Central Hindu College, founded by Indian Home Rule-leaguer and Theosophist, Annie Besant in 1898. After Besant and her associates were marginalised, the university was established by Madan Mohan Malaviya with the support of the maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, the maharaja of Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, and the lawyer Sunder Lal. With over 30,000 students, and 18,000 residing on campus, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia. The university is one of the eight public institutions declared as an Institute of Eminence by the Government of India. Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi(IIT-BHU) is a public technical university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College, it became the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1968. It was later designated an Indian Institute of Technology in 2012. IIT (BHU) Varanasi has 16 departments, 3 inter-disciplinary schools and 1 Humanities & Social Sciences Section. It is located inside the Banaras Hindu University Campus.

Patcha Ramachandra Rao was a metallurgist and administrator. He has the unique distinction of being the only Vice-Chancellor (2002–05) of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) who was also a student (1963–68) and faculty (1964–92) at that institution. From 1992 to 2002, Rao was the Director of the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. After his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of B.H.U., in 2005, he took the reins of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) as its first Vice-Chancellor. He was to serve DIAT until his superannuation in 2007. From 2007 till the end, Rao was a Raja Ramanna Fellow at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials, in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
Palle Rama Rao FREng is an Indian scientist noted for his contribution to the field of Physical and Mechanical Metallurgy. He has collaborated and conducted research activities for over dozen universities and associations all over India and abroad. He has been honoured with the titles of Padma Vibhushan in 2011 by president of India for his contributions to scientific community. He is acting as the chairman, Governing Council, International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy & New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad.
The vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (VC-BHU) is the chief administrator, and a full-time salaried officer of the Banaras Hindu University. The vice-chancellor derives their powers from sections 7(B) and 7(C) of the Banaras Hindu University Act and from the statutes of the said act.
Sachchida Nand Tripathi is an Indian scientist who works in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. He is a Higher Administrative Grade Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and also joint faculty at the Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He currently holds the Arjun Dev Joneja Faculty Chair in the department. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Government of India awarded him with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, for his outstanding contribution in the field of Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary sciences in 2014. Prof. Tripathi is an elected Fellow of major Sciences and Engineering academies of the country: Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering and also holds J. C. Bose Fellowship of Department of Science and Technology (India). He was awarded the Infosys Prize 2023 in Engineering and Computer Science for the deployment of large-scale sensor-based air quality network and mobile laboratory for hyper local measurements of pollution, data generation and analysis using AI+ML for effective air quality management and citizen awareness, and for the discovery of new pathways of aerosols formation and growth that provide mechanistic understanding of haze formation.
Onkar Nath Srivastava was an Indian material physicist, an Emeritus professor of Banaras Hindu University and the vice president for India and South Asia of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, who was known for his contributions to the disciplines of nanotechnology and hydrogen energy. He was the author of two books and over 440 scientific papers and a recipient of several honors including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in the science and technology categories. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to science and engineering.
Sandeep Verma is an Indian bioorganic chemist and chemical biologist, and a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK). At IITK, he heads Sandeep Verma's Research Group in the areas of ordered peptide assemblies, metal-mediated nanoscale systems, programmable soft matter for neuronal regeneration, novel antimicrobials, and small molecule-stem cell modulation. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2010, for his contributions to Chemical Sciences.
Gangadhar J. Sanjayan is an Indian bioorganic chemist, scientist and the head of The Sanjayan Lab at the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. He is known for his researches on the synthesis of designer peptide/protein mimetics and hetero-foldamers and is a recipient of the Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2012, for his contributions to chemical sciences.
Vinod Kumar Gaur is an Indian seismologist,a former director of the National Geophysical Research Institute and an honorary emeritus scientist at CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute, known for his prediction of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. He is reported to have conducted extensive studies on the tectonics of the Himalayas and is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, The World Academy of Sciences, Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. Shrikant Lele is an Indian metallurgical engineer and a distinguished professor of Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. He is a former director of the Institute of Technology of the university (2002–05) and is known for his studies on structural metallurgy. He is credited with reportedly original work on X-ray diffraction effects, solid state and martensitic transformations as well as spinodal decomposition in alloys and electron diffraction from quasicrystals. His researches have been documented in several peer-reviewed articles; and Google Scholar the online article repository of Indian Academy of Sciences has listed 33 of them.
