Communities in the Province of Manitoba, Canada include incorporated municipalities, unincorporated communities and First Nations communities.

Contents

Types of incorporated municipalities include urban municipalities, rural municipalities and local government districts. Urban municipalities can be named as cities, towns, villages or simply urban municipalities. [1]

The administration of urban and rural municipalities is regulated by The Municipal Act. [1] Some municipalities have since amalgamated, making this list inaccurate.

In the 2011 Census, Manitoba's communities combined for a total provincial population of 1,208,268. [2]

    Portage la Prairie is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. As of 2016, the population was 13,304 and the land area of the city was 24.68 square kilometres (9.53 sq mi).

    Cranberry Portage is an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district located in the Rural Municipality of Kelsey, Manitoba. It was an important part of the pre-European contact trade routes of the Cree and Assiniboine peoples. Long before the fur trade with the Bay and during the Fur Trade, this location was used as a campsite and portage between Grassy River, at the head of a number of well-used routes from Hudson Bay, and Lake Athapapuskow, which connected to the Saskatchewan River system. Once on the Saskatchewan routes were open through the prairies to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

    Provincial Trunk Highway 6 is a provincial primary highway located in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It runs from the Perimeter Highway of Winnipeg to the Thompson south city limits. It is also the main highway connecting Winnipeg to northern Manitoba. The speed limit is 100 km/h. The route is also used to deliver nickel from the Thompson mine to the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg. The section of highway between its southern terminus near Winnipeg and the second junction with PTH 68 near Eriksdale is part of the Northern Woods and Water Route. The portion of the highway between Ponton and Thompson was known as Highway 391 prior to 1986.

    Rivers is an unincorporated urban community in the Riverdale Municipality within the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is located 40 kilometres (25 mi) northwest of Brandon, 473 metres (1,552 ft) above sea level. It is within the Westman Region. Agriculture, health and related businesses provide income for the community and area. Rivers has a population of 1,257 people in the 2016 census.

    The Rural Municipality of Birtle is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on December 22, 1883. It ceased on January 1, 2015, as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the RM of Miniota and the Town of Birtle to form the Prairie View Municipality.

    Kelsey is a Manitoban rural municipality embedded within the province's Northern Region. It consists of several disjoint parts. The largest part is Carrot Valley, located around and southwest of The Pas along the Carrot River, but the communities of Wanless and Cranberry Portage, located further north, are also part of the municipality. It is 867.64 km2 large. Also lying in the area around The Pas is the Opaskwayak Cree Nation Indian reserve.

Headquartered in Winnipeg, the division is commanded by Assistant Commissioner Scott McMurchy and consists of 1089 police officers and 438 support staff.
