Towns in South Dakota have small populations, ranging from 3 up to 766 as of the 2010 Census. Cities are usually larger, but many places incorporated as cities also fall within this size range.

South Sioux City is a city in Dakota County, Nebraska, United States. It is located immediately across the Missouri River from Sioux City, Iowa, and is part of the Sioux City, IA-NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 13,353, making it the 14th most populous city in Nebraska.
Ruso is a city in McLean County, North Dakota, in the USA. The population was 1 at the 2020 census, making Ruso the least populous incorporated place in North Dakota.
Amidon is a city in and the county seat of Slope County, North Dakota, United States.

There is a large granary co-op at Columbia, also a post office, a bank, a bar, a church, a town park, and a community center, in addition to the city hall; and many homes.
Wagner is a city in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,490 at the 2020 census. The city is served by Wagner Municipal Airport as well as YST Transit buses.
Vermillion is a city and the county seat of Clay County. It is in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, United States, and is the state's 12th-most populous city. According to the 2020 Census, the population was 11,695. The city lies atop a bluff near the Missouri River.

Faith is a city in the northeastern corner of Meade County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 367 at the 2020 census. The most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known, Sue, was discovered approximately 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Faith in August 1990.

Dewey is an unincorporated community near the southwest corner of Custer County, South Dakota, United States, less than one mile from the Wyoming border in a prairie region of the Black Hills. There are approximately five or six homes in town. Dewey has a volunteer fire department in the Edgemont city district.
