Ferrari has manufactured three naturally-aspirated V8 racing engines, designed for Formula One racing. [5] First, the Tipo DS50 engine introduced in 1956; with the 2.5 L engine configuration. Second, the Tipo 205/B engine, introduced in 1964; with the 1.5 L engine configuration; and was designed by Franco Rocchi and Angelo Bellei. Then, a 42-year hiatus; until the FIA imposed a 2.4 L engine V8 configuration for all Formula One teams in 2006, with Ferrari introducing their Tipo 056 ; designed by Gilles Simon. [6]
The Tipo DS50 engine, used in the Ferrari D50, was introduced in 1954. This engine was a 2,488 cc (152 cu in), 90°, naturally aspirated, front-mounted V8; which produced between 260 bhp (194 kW) [7] and 285 bhp (213 kW). [8]
The Tipo 205/B engine developed 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp) @ 11,000 rpm; and had a bore and stroke of 67.0 mm × 52.8 mm (2.64 in × 2.08 in). [9] [10] [11]
Ferrari Type 056 was introduced by Ferrari, who used it in Formula 1 between 2006 and 2013. The V8 engine was developed under engine chief Paolo Martinelli. Its predecessor is the Tipo 055 used in the 2005 season, successor type 059/3 from 2014.
After the FIA had decided to introduce V8 engines from the 2006 season, Ferrari began developing such an engine for use in a Formula 1 car in mid-2004. In August 2005 the first test drives took place. For this purpose, the Tipo 056 was installed in a modified F2004. The road car engine department helped develop the Tipo 056. The engine management was by Magneti Marelli.
Ferrari used the engine from 2006 to 2013. In the 2009 and 2011 to 2013 seasons, Ferrari used the Tipo 056 in conjunction with KERS.
Red Bull also used the engine in 2006, but sourced its engines from Renault from the next season.
Scuderia Toro Rosso drove the Type 056 from 2007 to 2013, with KERS in the 2011 and 2013 seasons.
Spyker built the Type 056 in 2007, its successor Force India in 2008. For the 2009 season, Force India switched to Mercedes as the engine supplier.
From the 2010 to 2013 season, Sauber also obtained its engines from Ferrari. Sauber used KERS from the 2011 season.
On the very first race weekend in Bahrain in 2006, Michael Schumacher secured pole position in the Ferrari 248 F1 with the Tipo 056. The first victory followed three races later at the San Marino Grand Prix, also by Schumacher. Fernando Alonso 's last victory with the Tipo 056 came at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix. The most victories per season were nine, which was achieved three times with the Type 056 – in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
The Tipo 056 claimed 39 victories in 147 races (including 38 by Ferrari and one by Toro Rosso). Its drivers took 29 pole positions and set the fastest laps in 48 races. A driver with Tipo 056 stood on the podium 122 times. With him, Ferrari won a drivers' and two constructors' world championships.

The Toro Rosso STR2 is the car with which the Scuderia Toro Rosso team competed in the 2007 Formula One season. It was unveiled on 13 February 2007 at the Circuit de Catalunya. The car is, controversially, a variant of the Red Bull RB3 chassis. It was initially driven by Vitantonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed, until Speed was replaced by Sebastian Vettel at the Hungaroring for the remainder of the season. The car in a modified form was also used to compete in the first five races of the 2008 Formula One season. The modified car was driven by Sébastien Bourdais, four-consecutive-time Champ Car winner, and Vettel. The STR2 was the first-ever Toro Rosso F1 car to use the mandatory 90-degree Formula One V8 engine configuration but Toro Rosso opted for the 2006-spec Ferrari 056 instead of the 2007-spec because of the 1-year old Toro Rosso customer engine policy and as a cost-saving measure.

The Ferrari 158 was a Formula One racing car made by Ferrari in 1964 as a successor to the V6-powered Ferrari 156 F1.
The Ferrari flat-12 engine family is a series of flat-12 DOHC petrol engines produced by Ferrari from 1964 to 1996. The first racing Ferrari flat-12, the Mauro Forghieri-designed Tipo 207, was introduced in the Ferrari 1512 F1 car in 1964. Later flat-12 racing engines were used in Ferrari Formula One and sports racing cars from 1968 until 1980, including the 212 E Montagna, 312 B series, 312 PB and 312 T series. The roadgoing flat-12 engines were introduced with the 365 GT4 BB and were produced in various versions until the end of F512M production in 1996.
Vittorio Jano designed a new 60° V12 engine for sports car racing for Ferrari. This new engine, introduced in 1956, combined elements of both Colombo and Lampredi engines with new features. Engine architecture was more of Lampredi school but retained smaller Colombo internal measurements. Jano moved to Ferrari along with his designs for the Lancia D50 in 1955 and went on to design not only a new V12 but also a family of the Dino V6 engines soon after. Some of the technical ideas came from the Jano's Lancia V8 DOHC engine, intended for Formula One. This family of engines replaced Lampredi inline-4s known from Ferrari Monza line and went on to win many international races and titles for Ferrari. The design team comprised Jano as well as Vittorio Bellentani, Alberto Massimino, and Andrea Fraschetti.
The Ferrari SP was a series of Italian sports prototype racing cars produced by Ferrari during the early 1960s. All featured a rear mid-engine layout, a first for a Ferrari sports car. Major racing accolades include the 1962 European Hill Climb Championship, two overall Targa Florio victories, in 1961 and 1962, and "1962 Coupe des Sports" title.
Ferrari manufactured a series of 3.0-litre, naturally-aspirated, V10 racing engines, exclusively for their Formula One race cars; between 1996 and 2005. They chose a V10 engine configuration, because it offered the best compromise between power and fuel efficiency; the V12 was powerful but thirsty while the V8 was weaker but economical. They switched to 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine configuration for 2006. Over its decade-long evolution, power levels varied; from 715 hp @ 15,500 rpm in 1996, to over 900 horsepower, around 935 hp @ 19,000 rpm, toward the end of the 2005 season. The Tipo 05 series of engines, produced between 2001 and 2005, was officially stated to produce between 825 hp @ 17,800 rpm, and 865 hp @ 18,300 rpm. In qualifying mode, however, these engine were reputed to develop up to, or at times over, 900 horsepower (670 kW) at 19,000 rpm.
The BMW E41 and P80 series is a family of naturally-aspirated Formula One racing engines, designed and developed by BMW, and introduced in 2000 in partnership with Williams, and continued through 2006, during their partnership with Sauber.
The TJ and CA series are a family of naturally-aspirated V10 and V8 Formula One racing engines, in both 2.4-litre and 3-litre engine configurations, designed and developed by Cosworth; and produced between 2005 and 2013. The customer engines were used by Minardi, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Williams, Lotus, HRT, Virgin, and Marussia.
Ferrari has made a number of V12 racing engines designed for Formula One; made between 1950 and 1995. Some derived engines were also used in various Ferrari sports prototype race cars and production road cars.
Alfa Romeo has made three 8-cylinder Grand Prix racing engines designed for both Formula One and sports car racing; in both inline and V engine configurations. Their first was the supercharged 158/159, a straight-eight engine, with the 1.5 L engine configuration imposed by the FIA for forced induction engines, in 1950. After a 20-year gap, their second engine was the Tipo 33 engine, a 3-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, in 1970. Their third and final engine was the turbocharged 890T V8 engine in 1983, which was used by both Alfa Romeo until 1985, and Osella until 1988, until Alfa Romeo eventually pulled out of F1 that same year.
Ferrari made four naturally-aspirated V6 racing engines designed for Formula One; between 1958 and 1966. The Formula One regulations for 1954–1960 limited naturally aspirated engines to 2500 cc, and for the 1958 season, there was a change from alcohol fuels to avgas. The 246 F1 used a 2,417.34 cc Dino V6 engine with a 65° angle between the cylinder banks. The power output was 280 PS at 8500 rpm. This was the first use of a V6 engine in a Formula One car, but otherwise the 246 F1 was a conventional front-engine design. The Ferrari 246 F1 was good enough to win a World Championship for Mike Hawthorn and a second place in the Constructors' Championship for Ferrari.
Maserati made two naturally-aspirated, straight-6, racing engines, designed for Formula One; between 1952 and 1960. The first engine was the 2.0-liter A6G; in accordance with the engine regulations imposed by the FIA. Their second and last engine was the 250 F1; in accordance with the engine regulations imposed by the FIA for 1954. Several of these engines, or derivatives of these engines, were also used in various Maserati sports cars.
Ferrari has made a series of 1.6-litre, turbocharged, V6, Formula One racing engines, starting with the Tipo 059/3 designation for the 2014 season.
