The Ferrari 335 S was a sports racing car produced by Italian automobile manufacturer Ferrari between 1957 and 1958. The car was a direct response to the Maserati 450S which with its 4.5-litre engine was threatening to overpower the 3.8-litre 315 S and 3.5-litre 290 MM. [4] Four cars were produced in total. [1]
An evolution of the 315 S, it had an evolution of the Jano V12 engine displacing 4,023.32 cc (4.0 L) [5] and a maximum power output of 400 PS (395 hp; 294 kW) at 7,400 rpm; this increase in power allowed the car to attain an estimated top speed of around 300 km/h (186 mph). Due to its exceptional performance at the time, the car was also called "Super Testarossa". [6] [7] Four cars were produced (chassis numbers 0674, 0676, 0700 and 0764. The first two being 315 S later converted to 335 S spec).
The 335 S had a bleak competition history as it was involved in the crash at the 1957 Mille Miglia, which led to the cancellation of the race starting the following year due to public outrage. In its World Championship debut in the third round of the 1957 season, a 335 S (#531)(0676), driven by Spanish driver Alfonso de Portago (who had replaced an ill Luigi Musso) was in third place, running on a long straight road sector between the Lombard hamlets of Cerlongo and Guidizzolo when one of the tyres exploded. He lost control of the car; it hit a telephone pole, jumped over a brook, then hit several spectators. The Ferrari then bounced back on the road, hitting more spectators, slid over the road, spinning, and ended up, wheels down, in a brook at the other side of the road. In addition to de Portago, his American navigator Edmund Gunner Nelson and nine spectators – among them five children – lost their lives. [8] A further 20 were injured. De Portago's body was found near the car, severed in half. The car was destroyed in the accident. [2] [6] [9] [10]
The other 335 S (0700) driven by Peter Collins and Louis Klemantaski had broken down whilst in the lead giving victory to a 315 S (#535)(0684) driven by Piero Taruffi.
Due to the crash only a single 335 S (0700) in the hands of Collins and Olivier Gendebien was entered in the next round at the Nürburgring 1000km and came second behind an Aston Martin DBR1 and although both 335 S models failed at Le Mans allowing the Jaguar D Types a 1-2-3-4 finish, Collins and Phil Hill obtained another second place in 0700 at the Swedish GP behind a Maserati 450S with Mike Hawthorn and Luigi Musso finishing fourth in the sister car (0674). A single 335 S (0700) in the hands of Olivier Gendebien finished third at Spa in the non championship Grand Prix de RACB behind an Aston Martin DBR1 driven by Tony Brooks and a Ferrari 290 MM pilotted by Masten Gregory. In the final round of the World Sports Car Championship at the Venezuelan Grand Prix, a 335 S (0700) raced by Collins and Phil Hill won with Hawthorn and Musso (0674) finishing second. These results added to the earlier Mille Miglia victory by a 315 S and the win in the Buenos Aires 1000 Km by a 290 MM gave the World title to Ferrari. The change in regulations for the World Championship to a 3-litre engine limit which was a reaction to the Mille Miglia crash and earlier tragedies rendered the 335 S ineligible for the 1958 season onwards and Ferrari replaced the model with its 250 TR.
In 2016, a 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti sold for €32.1 million (US$35.1 million) at the Retromobile auction in Paris as a result of a bidding war between Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi making it the most expensive car to be sold at an auction at the time. [11] [6] [12] In the 315 S guise, the car had finished sixth in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1957 driven by Peter Collins and Maurice Trintignant and later driven by Wolfgang von Trips to a second place finish at the 1957 Mille Miglia. After having its engine upgraded to a 4.0-litre model, it then set the lap record at Le Mans, finished fourth in the Swedish GP and second in the Venezuelan GP. Finally, it won the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix driven by Stirling Moss. [13]
The Ferrari 250 is a series of sports cars and grand tourers built by Ferrari from 1952 to 1964. The company's most successful early line, the 250 series includes many variants designed for road use or sports car racing. 250 series cars are characterized by their use of a 3.0 L (2,953 cc) Colombo V12 engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo. The 250 series designation refers to this engine's cylinder displacement of approximately 250 cc. They were replaced by the 275 and 330 series cars.

The Ferrari Monza is one of a series of cars built by Ferrari. In the early 1950s, Ferrari shifted from using the compact Gioacchino Colombo-designed V12 engine in its smallest class of sports racers to a line of four-cylinder engines designed by Aurelio Lampredi. The 3. Internationales ADAC 1000 Kilometer Rennen auf dem Nürburgring took place on 26 May 1957, on the Nürburgring Nordschleife,. It was also the fourth round of the F.I.A. World Sports Car Championship. This would the first championship since the dreadful events in the Mille Miglia, Italy just a fortnight ago, where Alfonso de Portago crashed killing himself, his co-driver and nine spectators.
Vittorio Jano designed a new 60° V12 engine for sports car racing for Ferrari. This new engine, introduced in 1956, combined elements of both Colombo and Lampredi engines with new features. Engine architecture was more of Lampredi school but retained smaller Colombo internal measurements. Jano moved to Ferrari along with his designs for the Lancia D50 in 1955 and went on to design not only a new V12 but also a family of the Dino V6 engines soon after. Some of the technical ideas came from the Jano's Lancia V8 DOHC engine, intended for Formula One. This family of engines replaced Lampredi inline-4s known from Ferrari Monza line and went on to win many international races and titles for Ferrari. The design team comprised Jano as well as Vittorio Bellentani, Alberto Massimino, and Andrea Fraschetti.
The Ferrari 250 MM was a sports racing car produced by Ferrari from 1952 to 1954. After the initial racing successes of the 3.0-litre Colombo V12 engine, introduced in the 250 S one-off, Ferrari produced a serial racing model. It is best recognisable for the distinctive closed berlinetta bodywork by Pinin Farina. The "MM" in its name stood for the Mille Miglia race.
The Ferrari 376 S was a sports racing car produced by Ferrari in 1955. It was the first raced Ferrari powered by a new Aurelio Lampredi-designed inline-6 engine, created as a larger alternative to the inline-4 series of engines used in the Ferrari Monza race cars. The intention behind the development of this model was the 1955 Mille Miglia race. It was yet another attempt by Ferrari to match the new Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in competition. All of the created cars were further converted into a bigger capacity models.

The Ferrari 412 MI was a single-seater produced by Italian manufacturer Ferrari in 1958. It was a one-off purpose-built racer for the second edition of the 500 Miles of Monza to compete against American race cars. The 412 MI scored a pole position and finished the race on a third place, which was the best European-entry result. As per naming convention "412" stood for 4-litre, 12-cylinder engine. The "MI" suffix stood for "Monza-Indianapolis".
The Ferrari 412 S was a unique sports racing car produced by Ferrari in 1958. The 412 S combined Ferrari's most powerful V12 engine to date with a one-off experimental racing chassis. It was also incorrectly called as the 412 MI due to being built around an engine from the 500 Miles of Monza racer. The car was created specifically for John von Neumann to take on the American racing cars Scarabs in SCCA racing. Its famed drivers included Phil Hill and Richie Ginther.
Marquis Alfonso de Portago dies in a holocaust which probably spells the end of the Mille Miglia, greatest of all the open-road auto races.
