Four laning of national highway 179A has been taken up along stretch from Harur to Vaniyambadi. [5] Salem to Harur stretch is part of Chennai - Salem greenfield highway project which is also part of Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme. [6] Chennai-Salem Greenfield Corridor under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a centrally-sponsored and funded road and highways project, is a 277.30 km highway that involves the development of the Tambaram to Harur Section of NH-179B, Harur to Salem Section of NH-179A, Chengalpattu to Kancheepuram Section of NH-132B, Semmampadi to Chetpet Section of NH-179D and Polur to Tiruvannamalai Section of NH-38. The North–South–East–West r (NS-EW) is the largest ongoing highway project in India. It is the second phase of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), and consists of building 7300 kilometers of four/six lane highways associating Srinagar, Kanyakumari, Kochi, Porbandar and Silchar, at a cost of US$12.317 billion ₹1000000000000(One lakh Crore INR). As of 19 March 2024, 6875 of the 7142 kilometers project has been finished.
The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) was a project of four laning of existing national highways and six laning of selected major national highways of India. The project was started in 1998 under the leadership of Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. National Highways account for only about 2% of the total length of roads, but carry about 40% of the total traffic across the length and breadth of the country. This project is managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways. The NHDP represents 49,260 km of roads and highways work and construction in order to boost economic development of the country. The government has planned to end the NHDP program in early 2018 and subsume the ongoing projects under a larger Bharatmala project.

National Highway 46 was a national highway in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It ran from Krishnagiri to Walajapet in the state. It passed through Vellore and it was a highly important connecting road for vehicles travelling between Chennai and Bangalore. The total Length of NH 46 was 148 km (92 mi). The Krishnagiri-Walajapet section is being upgraded to six lanes by L&T on a build-operate-transfer basis.
Expressways are the highest class of roads in India. In July 2023, the total length of expressways in India was 5,930 km (3,680 mi), with 11,127.69 km (6,914.43 mi) under construction. These are controlled-access highways where entrance and exits are controlled by the use of cloverleaf, three-way, trumpet or grade separated interchanges that are incorporated into the design of the expressway and designed for maximum speed of 120 km/h, whereas National highways are flyover access or tolled, where entrance and exit is through the side of the flyover, at each intersection of highway with road, flyovers are provided to bypass the city/town/village traffic and these highways are designed for speed of 100 km/h. Some roads are not access-controlled expressways but are still named expressways, such as the Bagodara–Tarapur Expressway, Biju Expressway, these are actually state highways that are not declared by the central government as an Expressway, hence not an Expressway or National Highway.
East-West Industrial Corridor Highway of Arunachal Pradesh, a 2-lane and 966.78 km long including existing 274.20 km Pasighat-Manmao route, is a proposed highway across lower foothills of Arunachal Pradesh state in India from Bhairabkunda in Assam at tri-junction of Bhutan-Assam-Arunachal Pradesh in west to Kanubari tri-junction of Nagaland-Assam-Arunachal Pradesh in east.
National Highway 46 is a primary National Highway in India. This highway is in the state of Madhya Pradesh, running from Gwalior to Betul. This national highway is 634 km (394 mi) long. Before renumbering of national highways, NH-46 was variously numbered as old national highways 3, 12 & 69. Gwalior-Biaora section of this highway is a part of the Legendary Agra-Bombay Road, also known as AB Road
National Highway 79 is a National Highway in India entirely within the state of Tamil Nadu. It runs between Ulundurpettai and Salem in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu for a total of 134 km (83 mi). It connects with NH 44 and NH 544 at Salem. NH 79 connects NH 68 and SH 69 at Ulundurpettai and SH 6 at kallakurichi. It was upgraded to a dual carriageway road in two phases on a Build-operate-transfer basis by Reliance Infrastructure and Maytas.
The Bharatmala Pariyojna was a project in India implemented by Government of India. It was slated to interconnect 550 District Headquarters through a minimum 4-lane highway by raising the number of corridors to 50 and move 80% freight traffic to National Highways by interconnecting 24 logistics parks, 66 inter-corridors (IC) of total 8,000 km (5,000 mi), 116 feeder routes (FR) of total 7,500 km (4,700 mi) and 7 north east Multi-Modal waterway ports. The project also includez development of tunnels, bridges, elevated corridors, flyovers, overpass, interchanges, bypasses, ring roads etc. to provide shortest, jam free & optimized connectivity to multiple places, it is a centrally-sponsored and funded Road and Highways project of the Government of India. This ambitious umbrella programme subsumed all existing Highway Projects including the flagship National Highways Development Project (NHDP), launched by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1998. The total investment for 83,677 km (51,994 mi) committed new highways is estimated at ₹10.63 trillion (US$130 billion), making it the single largest outlay for a government road construction scheme. The project will build highways from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and then cover the entire string of Himalayan territories - Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand - and then portions of borders of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar alongside Terai, and move to West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and right up to the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur and Mizoram. Special emphasis will be given on providing connectivity to far-flung border and rural areas including the tribal and backward areas.
National Highway 77 is a National Highway in India. This is the main National Highway to connect Pondicherry with Krishnagiri. It starts from Tindivanam in Villupuram district then runs westward till Uthangarai via Thiruvannamalai and then joins NH 48 at Krishnagiri. NH-77 runs entirely in the state of Tamil Nadu.
National Highway 48 is a major National Highway of India that starts at Delhi and terminates at Chennai traversing through seven states of India. It has a total length of 2807 km. NH 48 passes through the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The stretch between Pune and Bengaluru was known as P.B. Road in olden days.
Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway is an approved 670 km (420 mi) long, 4-lane wide controlled-access expressway, which will connect Bahadurgarh border near Delhi with Katra in Jammu and Kashmir via Haryana and Punjab. It will have a spur section which will connect Nakodar with Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport located in Raja Sansi, Amritsar. The 397.7 km (247.1 mi) long Delhi–Katra Expressway is National Expressway 5(NE-5) and 99 km (62 mi) long Nakodar-Amritsar Expressway is National Expressway 5A(NE-5A). Once completed, it will reduce the current Delhi-Katra distance from 727 km (452 mi) to 588 km (365 mi) and the time travel will be reduced from 14 hours to 6 hours, and Delhi-Amritsar distance to 405 km (252 mi) and from the time travel will be reduced from 8 hours to only 4 hours.
National Highway 70, commonly referred to as NH 70 is a primary national highway in India. NH-70 traverses the state of Rajasthan in India. It is part of Bharatmala pariyojana.
National Highway 544D, commonly called NH 544D, and sometimes Anantapur-Guntur National highway 544D, is a national highway in India. It is a spur road of National Highway 44. NH-544D traverses the state of Andhra Pradesh in India.
National Highway 717A, commonly referred to as NH 717A is a National Highway in India which is a part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India. NH 717-A starts from National Highway 17 at Bagrakote and ends in Gangtok. NH-717A traverses the states of West Bengal and Sikkim in India. It runs through two districts of West Bengal namely Jalpaiguri district, Kalimpong district and two districts of Sikkim, which are Pakyong District and Gangtok District. The highway is being constructed and maintained by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
National Highway 365BB is a national highway in India. It is a secondary route of National Highway 65. NH-365BB traverses the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in India. It starts at Suryapet and ends at Kovvur(Rajamahendravaram).Major cities on this route are Suryapet, Khammam and Rajamahendravaram.
Raipur–Visakhapatnam Expressway (NH-130CD), part of Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (EC-15), is an under-construction, six-lane, 464 km (288 mi) long greenfield expressway, which will pass through the states of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh in central and east-central India. At present, from Durg, it runs between NH-30 and NH-130C till Borigumma, then runs east of NH-26 till Sunabeda and then west of NH-26 till Visakhapatnam after terminating with NH-16 at Vizianagaram. Along the new route, it will connect Raipur by starting at Abhanpur in Raipur district with the cities of Dhamtari, Kanker, Kondagaon, Koraput, and Sabbavaram before terminating at Visakhapatnam Port.
Pune–Bengaluru Expressway is a planned 700 km long, 8 lane, Greenfield access-controlled expressway in Maharashtra and Karnataka. It is to be part of Bharatmala Pariyojana. The expressway will pass through 12 districts, of which three are in Maharashtra and nine are in Karnataka. It connects Pune with Bengaluru. The Bengaluru-Pune Expressway will reduce the distance between the two cities by about 95 km. It is estimated that time to drive from Bengaluru to Pune will reduce from the current 15 hours to 7 hours after the completion of this expressway. At Pune, the expressway will also connect with the Pune–Mumbai Expressway. It is reported that the expressway is targeted to be completed by 2028.
Raipur–Ranchi-Dhanbad Expressway (NH), part of Raipur–Dhanbad Economic Corridor (EC-07), is an under-construction, Four-lane, 707 km (439 mi) long access-controlled greenfield expressway, which will pass through the states of Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand from central to eastern India. It will pass through the coal reserves belt and Industrial towns of Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba, Jashpur, Ranchi, Bokaro, and Dhanbad between Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand in order to promote Industrialization in this region. This project will be mix of greenfield and brownfield. The existing part between Raipur-Bilaspur Expressway will be brownfield which will convert into Six lane expressway while the rest of the part between Bilaspur to Dhanbad will be fully greenfield.
