National Highway 32 (NH 32) is a National Highway in India. It starts from Chennai and terminates at Thoothukudi. [1] [2] It is also known as East Coast Road.

The highway is extended up to Thoothukudi as per the notification on 5 December 2017. [3]

Route

The highway starting from its junction with NH-48 near Chennai connecting Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Puducherry, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Thiruthuraipoondi, Muthupettai, Adirampattinam, Manamelkudi, Thondi, Devipattinam, Ramanathapuram bypass, Thiruppullani, Keelakarai, Ervadi, Valinokkam, Sayalgudi, Vembar, Vaippar, Kulathur, Veppalodai, Pattina, Maruthur and terminating at its junction with NH-44 near Thoothukudi. Proposed plans

Extension from Thoothukudi to Kanyakumari

The highway is planned to extend with a 123 kilometres (76 mi) long stretch from Thoothukudi to Kanyakumari. The preparation for DPR have started. [4]

Four-lane making

The highway is planned to be made into a four lane stretch in three phases. In the first phase, four lane will be completed from Thoothkudi to Karaikudi covering 230.2 kilometres (143.0 mi). Next phase of four laning will be completed from Karaikudi to Cuddalore covering 222.3 kilometres (138.1 mi). The last phase of four laning will be completed in Cuddalore to Chennai stretch covering 204.5 kilometres (127.1 mi). The preparation for DPR is completed for first phase of four-lane making.

The Rameswaram Express, previously known as the Boat Mail or Indo-Ceylon Express, is an express train that connects Rameswaram with the state capital Chennai via Tambaram, Chengalpet, Melmaruvattur, Viluppuram, Cuddalore port, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai, Tanjore, Tiruchchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Karaikudi, Sivagangai, Manamadurai, Paramakkudi and Ramanathapuram. During the 20th century, it was a combined train - steamer ferry- Train service between India and Ceylon. Connecting Chennai and Colombo, the system initially utilised a rail-to-sea operation, but changed to a rail-sea-rail operation. Passengers could buy a single ticket for the journey from Chennai to Colombo full stretch over sea journey. After Indian Independence, the ferry service was stopped and Train was running in the name Dhanushkodi Express from Chennai Egmore to Dhanushkodi. After Dhanushkodi was destroyed in the Cyclone of 1964, the train service was stopped. Adirampattinam is a municipality in the Pattukottai taluk of the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also short known by Adirai. It is the largest coastal town in the district and fourth largest town in the Thanjavur district.

Tirunelveli City being the district headquarters of Tirunelveli District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has a very extensive transport network. The Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur main line connects Chennai Egmore and Thanjavur Junction both in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur main line is part of Chennai–Viluppuram–Chidambaram-Mayiladuthurai–Kumbakonam–Thanjavur–Tiruchirappalli line.
