Barasat is a city and a municipality of North 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal, India. It is the headquarters of Barasat Sadar subdivision. It is close to Kolkata and a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Located in the Ganges delta, Barasat is a regional transportation hub as a rail and road junction. National Highway 12, NH 112, Taki Road and Barrackpore-Barasat Road are the main connectivity links to the city.
North 24 Parganas (abv. 24 PGS (N)) or sometimes North Twenty Four Parganas is a district in southern West Bengal, of eastern India. North 24 Parganas extends in the tropical zone from latitude 22° 11′ 6″ north to 23° 15′ 2″ north and from longitude 88º20' east to 89º5' east. The whole road is the part of Asian Highway 1. The road acts as a major link between places in and around Kolkata, especially Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport and Barasat. The road meets commuter (suburban) rail link at Barasat Junction railway station. Metro stations on this road include Shyambazar and Belgachia.

Once a part of the old Calcutta–Jessore–Khulna line, today it is a busy suburban section of the Kolkata Suburban Railway's Sealdah North section.
