Preaxostyla, also known as Anaeromonadea, [1] [2] is a group of excavate protists, comprising the oxymonads, Trimastix , [3] and Paratrimastix . [4] This group is studied as a model system for reductive evolution of mitochondria, [5] because it includes both organisms with anaerobic mitochondrion-like organelles ( Trimastix [6] and Paratrimastix [7] ), and those that have completely lost their mitochondria (oxymonads Monocercomonoides , [8] Streblomastix , and Blattamonas [6] ).
