Braithwaite & Co. Limited is an Indian public sector undertaking which is engaged in the manufacture of railway wagons, cranes and other engineering services. It is wholly owned by the Government of India and under the administrative control of the Ministry of Railways. Its headquarters are located at Kolkata, West Bengal.

The company has three units – Clive Works, Victoria Works both in Calcutta, and Angus Works in Hooghly District, West Bengal. From 2010 the administrative control of the subsidiary has been taken over by the Indian Railways. [3] [4] [5]

Present status

In 1986, Braithwaite & Co., Ltd. came under the umbrella of Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam, which became holding company of five companies in eastern India, [3] namely:

With effect from 2010, the management of Braithwaite & Co. Limited has been transferred from the Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises to the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. [6] Today Braithwaite is an engineering conglomerate that manufactures:

Financials

The company reported total income of Rs.1103.92 crores during the Financial Year ended March 31, 2024 as compared to Rs.1044.76 crores during the Financial Year ended March 31, 2023.

There was a net profit of Rs.16.47 crores reported for the Financial Year ended March 31, 2024 as against net profit of Rs.49.73 crores for the Financial Year ended March 31, 2023. [2]

Miniratna category-I status

Braithwaite & Co, under the UPA Government in 2010 got enlisted for disinvestment, since the engineering firm made a turnaround with a manifold increase in annual turnover and profits for three consecutive years, in January 2022 it received recognition as a Mini Ratna-I public sector undertaking. [7]

On 4 April 2018, Cabinet approves closure of loss making Burn Standard Company Limited. The company was formed with the merger of two companies – Burn & Company and Indian Standard Wagon, and was nationalised in 1975. In fiscal 2006, the company reported aggregated revenues of 1,373 million (US$16 million). Subsequently, the company with its two engineering units at Howrah and Burnpur came under the administrative control of Ministry of Railways in September 2010. Vidyasagar Setu, also known as the Second Hooghly Bridge, is an 822.96-metre-long (2,700 ft) cable-stayed six-laned toll bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India, linking the cities of Kolkata and Howrah. Opened in 1992, Vidyasagar Setu was the first and longest cable-stayed bridge in India at the time of its inauguration. It was the second bridge to be built across the Hooghly River in Kolkata metropolitan region and was named after the education reformer Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. The project had a cost of ₹388 crore to build. The project was a joint effort between the public and private sectors, under the control of the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC).

Jessop & Company Limited was an Indian Government owned engineering company based at Dum Dum, Kolkata, India. It was sold by Government of India to Ruia Group when Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Bharatiya Janta Party was in power. It is part of the Ruia Group of companies, which also owns prominent rubber & tyre companies like Dunlop India and Falcon Tyres.

Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) in India are government-owned entities in which at least 51% of stake is under the ownership of the Government of India or state governments.These type of firms can also be a joint venture of multiple PSUs. These entities perform commercial functions on behalf of the government. Depending on the level of government ownership, PSUs are officially classified into two categories: Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), owned by the central government or other CPSUs; and State Public Sector Undertakings (SPSUs), owned by state governments. CPSU and SPSU is further classified into Strategic Sector and Non-Strategic Sector. Depending on their financial performance and progress, CPSUs are granted the status of Maharatna, Navaratna, and Miniratna.
