The thirteenth legislative assembly election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members of the 140 constituencies in Kerala. Election results were released on 13 May 2011. The results proved to be one of the closest elections in Kerala's history, with the UDF beating the LDF by a margin of 4 seats.
Kerala, locally known as Keralam, is a state on the southwestern, Malabar Coast of India. It was formed on 1 November 1956, following passage of the States Reorganisation Act, by combining Malayalam-speaking regions. Spread over 38,863 km2 (15,005 sq mi), Kerala is the twenty-second largest Indian state by area. It is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea and Arabian Sea to the west. With 33,387,677 inhabitants as per the 2011 Census, Kerala is the thirteenth-largest Indian state by population. It is divided into 14 districts with the capital being Thiruvananthapuram. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state.
There are Three major political coalitions in Kerala. The United Democratic Front (UDF) is the coalition of centrist and centre-left parties led by the Indian National Congress. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is the coalition of leftwing and far-left parties, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M). The right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is also contesting in the state and fielded candidates in 139 constituencies, with one seat to their NDA alliance partner Janata Dal (United). [1] [2]
The Indian National Congress(
Left Democratic Front (LDF) is a coalition of left-wing political parties in the state of Kerala, India. It is one of the two major political coalitions in Kerala, the other being the United Democratic Front each of which have been in power alternatively for the last two decades. LDF won the May 2016 election, and is now in power. The coalition consists of Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) and variety of other smaller parties.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is the largest communist party in India. The party emerged from a split from the Communist Party of India in 1964. The CPI(M) was formed at the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of India held in Calcutta from 31 October to 7 November 1964. As of 2018, CPI(M) is leading the state government in Kerala and having elected members in 8 state legislative assemblies including Kerala, West Bengal, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan. It also leads the West Bengal Left Front. As of 2016, CPI(M) claimed to have 1,048,678 members. The highest body of the party is the Politburo.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting in all the 140 seats.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is a national political party in India. By vote share in the 2014 general election, it is India's third-largest national party, though it did not win any seats in the Lok Sabha. It was formed to represent Bahujans, referring to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes (OBC), along with religious minorities. According to Kanshi Ram, when he founded the party in 1984, the Bahujans comprised 85 percent of India's population, but were divided into 6,000 different castes. The party claims to be inspired by the philosophy of Gautama Buddha, B. R. Ambedkar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Narayana Guru, Periyar E. V. Ramasamy and Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj. Kanshi Ram named his protégée Mayawati as his successor in 2001.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) contests in 6 seats in the state.
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is an Indian political party in the state of Tamil Nadu and in the union territory of Puducherry. It is currently in power in the state of Tamil Nadu and is the third largest party in the Lok Sabha. AIADMK is a Dravidian party founded by M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) on 17 October 1972 as a breakaway faction of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). From 1989 to 2016, AIADMK was led by Jayalalithaa, who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on several occasions. The party has won majorities in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly seven times, making it the most successful political outfit in the state's history. The party headquarters is located in the Royapettah neighbourhood of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in a building donated to the party in 1986 by Janaki Ramachandran, MGR's wife.
The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) (SUCI) [3] is contesting in 26 seats.
The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist)' or SUCI(C), previously called the Socialist Unity Centre of India and "Socialist Unity Centre" is a communist party in India. The party was founded by Shibdas Ghosh, Nihar Mukherjee and others in 1948.
The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) [4] fielded candidates in 84 [5] constituencies.
The Shiv Sena is contesting 44 [6] seats, without any alliance with the BJP.
Common election symbols are provided only to national parties and registered recognized state parties. [7] Registered unrecognized parties are given free symbols as per availability, based on request.

The official constituency wise list of candidates with their election symbols
There are 140 constituencies in Kerala, spread over 14 districts, based on the Delimitation commission of 2002. [8] Many constituencies present in the 2006 elections become non-existent and 24 new constituencies came into existence following the delimitation.
Aranmula constituency in Pathanamathitta district is the only seat in the state that has over two lakh voters at 203,411.The constituency that has the second highest number of voters is Sultan Battery in Wayanad district with over 196,078 voters, followed by Kunnathur in Kollam district with over 190,322 voters. Kozhikode South constituency has the fewest voters with 130,254, followed by Ernakulam with 133,398 and Tanur in Malappuram district with 136,183 voters respectively. [9]
Female voters outnumber the male voters in 127 of the 140 assembly seats.The Aranmula constituency has the highest number of female voters in the state, followed by Adoor with 102,336 and Manalur with 102,300 females. [9] [10]
Peerumedu constituency has the most polling booths, with 195 booths.
Thiruvananthapuram district has the largest number of 100 candidates in the fray, the fewest, with 17 candidates, is in Wayanad. [11]
Poonjar constituency has the maximum number of candidates, 13. The fewest candidates is 4, in the constituencies of Sulthanbathery, Alathur, Malampuzha and Kaduthuruthy. [12]
V. S. Achuthanandan started the LDF campaign in Malampuzha, Palakkad on 21-Mar-2011. [13]
An Asianet News journalist was allegedly roughed up by P. Jayarajan, a senior legislator of Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front after a chat show in Kannur. [14] [15]
The use of a helicopter by KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala in poll campaign was criticised by LDF. [16]
The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission's order directing the state government to defer its decision to extend a scheme for providing rice at Rs.2 per kg to all ration card holders that was announced on the eve of the assembly elections. [17]
Former UDF M.L.A. Sobhana George who gave nomination to contest as an Independent candidate from Chenganoor later withdrew her candidature. Janakeeya Vikasana Munnai leader M. R. Murali also withdrew his nomination from contesting polls in Shoranur. [18]

The thirteenth legislative assembly election was held on 13 April 2011. The filing of nominations for the elections ended on 26 March 2011. A total of 1373 contestants filed nominations. The scrutiny of nominations took place on 29 March 2011. According to the latest revised electoral list, there are a total of 22,878,767 voters, with 11,919,652 women and 10,959,115 men. There are 20,758 polling booths in 11,662 polling locations in the state. [33]
A total of 971 candidates contested the elections, after the withdrawal of nominations closed. [11]
The polling to elect members of assembly from the 140 constituencies in Kerala was held successfully on 13 April 2011. 75.12 per cent voter turn out was recorded in the state. The district wise and constituency wise polling percentage is as given below. [34] [35]
Re-polling was conducted on two polling stations in the state on 16-April-2011, in the Legislative Assembly constituencies of Pattambi and Chalakkudy.

The Election resulted in a slender victory for the UDF coalition winning 72 out of the 140 assembly seats while the incumbent LDF garnered the remaining 68 seats. The UDF lead was further extended to 73 through the subsequent by-election in Neyyattinkara constituency in which the incumbent MLA, R. Selvaraj, resigned from LDF to join UDF and got re-elected.

Suresh Gopi is an Indian film actor, politician, playback singer and television presenter. He works predominantly in Malayalam cinema and has also appeared in few Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bollywood films. Suresh has acted in more than 200 films and is a recipient of a National Film Award and Kerala State Film Award. He currently serves as a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha. The 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held on 5 May 2013 to elect members from 223 constituencies in the Indian state of Karnataka. Five major political parties contested the election: Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (Secular), B. S. Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) and B. The election for the Piriyapatna constituency was postponed to 28 May 2013 due to the death of the BJP candidate for the seat. The voter turnout in the state was 70.23%.

The results were announced on 19 October. The BJP won the majority in the Assembly. Manohar Lal Khattar was chosen to head the new government.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election was held on 16 May 2016 for the 232 seats of the Legislative Assembly in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. AIADMK under J. Jayalalithaa won the elections and became the first ruling party to be re-elected in Tamil Nadu since 1984, though with a reduced majority. DMK won half of the seats it contested but its allies performed poorly; notably, the Indian National Congress won 16% of the seats they contested and the alliance lost due to its poor performance. The votes were counted on 19 May 2016. In the previous election in 2011, AIADMK, under the leadership of Jayalalithaa, won a simple majority and formed the government, while DMDK chief Vijayakanth served as the Leader of Opposition until January 2016. This is the last election Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi contested as they both died in office later.

The Assam Legislative Assembly Election of 2016 was held in two phases, on 4 and 11 April 2016, to elect members of the 126 constituencies in Assam, a state in North-eastern India. The overall voter turnout was 84.72%, which set a new record for Assam. The turnout was an increase from the 2011 Assembly election figure of 75%.
The election to the 17th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was held from 11 February to 8 March 2017 in 7 phases. This election saw voter turnout of 61.04% compared to 59.40% in the previous election. Bharatiya Janata Party won this election by an overwhelming three-quarter majority of 325 seats despite not projecting a chief ministerial candidate before the election. As part of its election strategy BJP contested under a collective leadership and capitalised mostly on the political clout and 'brand' of its leader, Narendra Modi. In the previous election in 2012, the Samajwadi Party had won a majority and formed government in the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav.

The 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held on 12 May 2018 in 222 constituencies to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The election was postponed in Jayanagar and Rajarajeshwari Nagar, following the death of the MLA B. N. Vijaya Kumar and a voter fraud scandal respectively till 28 May. The election saw a voter turnout of 72.13 per cent, the highest in Karnataka since 1952 assembly polls. The counting of votes took place on 15 May 2018.
