Notes

  1. This school was established in 1806 as Cumberland College. It changed its name to the University of Nashville in 1826. In 1875 a financial crisis resulted in the school splitting into three entities: a preparatory school that exists today, the medical school which soon merged into Vanderbilt University, and the main, collegiate program, which was named the Peabody Normal School. After another financial crisis, in 1979, Peabody merged with Vanderbilt.
  2. Georgia Military Institute was burned during the American Civil War and never reopened.
  3. Virginia Kappa was re-established in 1925 by absorbing Sigma Tau Delta (local), established in 1922. It was restored as a colony in 1982 and 2011.
