List of Colombians killed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine

At least 74 Colombian citizens have been killed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 73 of them as servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and most of them being military veterans. One Colombian fighting for the Ukrainian Armed Forces was also captured by the Russian Army in June 2024. In addition, three Colombians are listed as missing in action fighting for Ukraine, while two went missing as they were returning to Colombia. As of July 2024, 200 Colombians were fighting in Ukraine. [1]

Contents

Colombian fighters are increasingly drawn to Ukraine because the pay they receive there is much higher than what is normally paid in Colombia. [2]

List of fatalities

On 4 June 2024, the Colombian Ambassador in the United Kingdom said that 51 Colombian nationals died in Ukraine fighting as mercenaries. [3] The following list contains 72 servicemen listed as killed among the Armed Forces of Ukraine:

In addition, one Colombian, Alexis Castillo, aged 34, was killed while fighting on the side of the pro-Russian separatists on October 28, 2022, in the Donbas region. [72]

Other casualties

On 6 June 2024, Miguel Ángel Cárdenas Montilla, a ex-colombian policeman fighting for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, was captured by Russian forces. [3] In addition, two Colombians, Anderson David Manquillo, [73] and Juan Daniel Tangarife Gutiérrez went missing in action in Ukraine, [74] [75] while two more, Alexander Ante and Jose Aron Medina Aranda, went missing as they were returning to Colombia. Juanes: MTV Unplugged is the second live album of Colombian singer Juanes. It was recorded before a live audience at the New World Symphony Center in Miami Beach, Florida, on February 1, 2012, and was released by Universal Music Latino on May 29, 2012. The album includes featured performances by the Spanish composer Joaquín Sabina and the Brazilian singer Paula Fernandes. The album features rearranged takes on Juanes' hit songs like "Me Enamora", "La Camisa Negra" and "A Dios le Pido". The first single of the live album was released on March 5, 2012, called La Señal, which became a hit in Latin America. The second single was "Me Enamora", with new instrumental arrangements, and was released two days after of the album's release. The album featured three new songs, one of which was a collaboration with Joaquín Sabina. The Colombian peace agreement referendum was held on 2 October 2016, aiming to ratify the final agreement on the termination of the Colombian conflict between the Colombian government and the FARC guerillas. However, the 'No' option ended up winning by a narrow margin.

Los Morales and stylized onscreen as Los Morales, lo que se hereda, se canta, is a Colombian biographical telenovela based on the life of the famous Colombian singers, father and son duo Kaleth and Miguel Morales and produced by Luis Alberto Restrepo for Caracol Televisión. It is known in other countries as La Dinastía and stylized as La Dinastía, cuando canta el corazón and in English as Dynasty, When the Heart Sings. Augusto Ibáñez Guzmán was a Colombian lawyer and academic. He was the President of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia from 2009–2012.

Casualties in the Russo-Ukrainian War include six deaths during the 2014 annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, 14,200–14,400 military and civilian deaths during the War in Donbas, and up to 500,000 estimated casualties during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Juan José Florián Valencia is a Colombian paracyclist and former para swimmer. He was the national record holder in multiple S5 swimming events, and won the road race and time trial cycling events at the 2021 Colombian National Championships. Florián fought for both sides in the Colombian conflict.

The International Legion of Territorial Defence of Ukraine, or the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, is a military unit of the Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine composed of foreign volunteers. It was created on 27 February 2022 by the Ukrainian government at the request of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to fight against the Russian invasion of the country.
