Left Democratic Front (Kerala) political parties in Kerala

Left Democratic Front (LDF) is a coalition of left-wing political parties in the state of Kerala, India. It is one of the two major political coalitions in Kerala, the other being the United Democratic Front each of which have been in power alternatively for the last two decades. LDF won the May 2016 election, and is now in power. The coalition consists of Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) and variety of other smaller parties.

Background

The tenure of Kerala Legislative Assembly was to end on May 31, 2016. [4] As per the voters list published on 14 January 2016, there were around 2.60 crore (26 million) eligible voters including 6.18 lakh (618,000) new voters in the age group 18-21. Elections to the 140-member assembly were held in 21,498 polling stations set up at 12,038 locations. [5] There were 500 model polling stations. [6] Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme was undertaken in Kerala for voter awareness. [7]

2,065 Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) units were used by the Election commission in 1,650 polling stations in 12 constituencies. VVPAT were not used in Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Wayanad and Kasaragod districts. [8] [9] [10] The Election Commission launched several mobile apps. [6]

Voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) or verifiable paper record (VPR) is a method of providing feedback to voters using a ballotless voting system. A VVPAT is intended as an independent verification system for voting machines designed to allow voters to verify that their vote was cast correctly, to detect possible election fraud or malfunction, and to provide a means to audit the stored electronic results. It contains the name of the candidate and symbol of the party/individual candidate. The VVPAT must be destroyed by the voter before leaving the room.

Parties and coalitions

There are two major political coalitions in Kerala. The United Democratic Front (UDF) is the coalition of centrist and centre-left parties led by the Indian National Congress. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is the coalition of left wing and far-left parties, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M). The right wing National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharathiya Janata Party contests independently of the two major coalitions.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) is an alliance of political parties in Kerala state, India, created by the prominent Indian National Congress (INC) party leader Shri. K. Karunakaran in the 1970s. Since its formation, the coalition has sustained itself on support from different social, caste and religious groups as a powerful bloc to take on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led Left Democratic Front (LDF). This alliance is led by the INC party in the state of Kerala. In the 2016 Legislative assembly elections UDF just won 47 out of 140 seats and hence lost the power again to Left Democratic Front. Later in August 2016 KC(M)Kerala Congress (M) left the alliance. In January 2018 Janatha Dal(United) left the alliance from UDF. In 2018 Kerala Congress (M) made a re-entry to the front.

Indian National Congress Major political party in India

The Indian National Congress(pronunciation ) is a broadly based political party in India. Founded in 1885, it was the first modern nationalist movement to emerge in the British Empire in Asia and Africa. From the late 19th century, and especially after 1920, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Congress became the principal leader of the Indian independence movement. Congress led India to independence from Great Britain, and powerfully influenced other anti-colonial nationalist movements in the British Empire.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) political party

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is the largest communist party in India. The party emerged from a split from the Communist Party of India in 1964. The CPI(M) was formed at the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of India held in Calcutta from 31 October to 7 November 1964. As of 2018, CPI(M) is leading the state government in Kerala and having elected members in 8 state legislative assemblies including Kerala, West Bengal, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan. It also leads the West Bengal Left Front. As of 2016, CPI(M) claimed to have 1,048,678 members. The highest body of the party is the Politburo.
