The African National Congress (ANC) fielded 284 candidates for the election, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is seeking a second and final term as head of state. However, the party was criticized for provisionally including four ministers (Zizi Kodwa, Malusi Gigaba, David Mahlobo, and Gwede Mantashe) who were implicated in a corruption investigation into the administration of former president Jacob Zuma, pending the final results of an intraparty review. Fourteen other officials were either disqualified or not listed as candidates by the ANC over the same issue. [4]
Some independent candidates appear on the regional lists for more than one region.
uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) included former president Jacob Zuma at the top of its list. The IEC received objections to his eligibility, based on Section 47 of the Constitution, which stipulated that one cannot be elected to Parliament if sentenced to more than twelve months in prison, and five years has not passed since the sentence. Zuma was sentenced to fifteen months in prison in 2021. [5] [6] The IEC initially ruled that Zuma was not eligible to stand. [7] However, the Electoral Court overturned this decision, permitting Zuma to stand. [8]
