The North Coast of California is located on the Pacific coast in between the San Francisco Bay and the Oregon border and includes Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, and Mendocino counties.

Ferndale is a city in Humboldt County, California, United States. Its population was 1,371 at the 2010 census, down from 1,382 at the 2000 census. Ferndale is the northern gateway to California's Lost Coast and the city, which is sited on the edge of a wide plain near the mouth of the Eel River, is also located near the extensive preserves of coast redwood forests.

The highway was originally designed to be the northernmost segment of State Route 1, but after construction of the Coast Highway through the Lost Coast region was abandoned, the route to Ferndale was renumbered to SR 211.

Cape Mendocino Light was a navigation light at Cape Mendocino, California. The former lighthouse was relocated to Shelter Cove near Point Delgada, California in 1998, and the historic Fresnel lens to Ferndale, California, in 1948. An automated beacon operated for a number of years but was removed in May 2013.

The Centerville Beach Cross is a monument that commemorates the 17 passengers and 21 crew members who died in the shipwreck of the SS Northerner on January 6, 1860. The vessel, owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, struck a rock near Cape Mendocino and wrecked near Centerville Beach, in Humboldt County, California. The monument is registered as California Historical Landmark # 173.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Salt River (California)</span> River in California, United States

The Salt River is a formerly navigable hanging channel of the Eel River which flowed about 9 miles (14 km) from near Fortuna and Waddington, California, to the estuary at the Pacific Ocean, until siltation from logging and agricultural practices essentially closed the channel. It was historically an important navigation route until the early 20th century. It now intercepts and drains tributaries from the Wildcat Hills along the south side of the Eel River floodplain. Efforts to restore the river began in 1987, permits and construction began in 2012, and water first flowed in the restored channel in October 2013.

On December 20, 2022, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Ferndale, California in Humboldt County, United States at 10:34:25 UTC, or 2:34 a.m. PST.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mattole Road</span>

Mattole Road is a 61.4-mile-long (98.8 km) county road in Humboldt County, California. It originates at Ferndale, passes through Capetown and crosses the Bear River, then reaches the Pacific coastline at Cape Mendocino and follows the beach for seven miles (11 km), passes through Petrolia and Honeydew, crosses Panther Gap at 2,744 feet (836 m) elevation, and terminates near U.S. Route 101 (US 101) and Avenue of the Giants inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It is the only public access to the Pacific Ocean coastline of the Lost Coast.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Fern Cottage (California)</span> Pioneer ranch in northern California

The 160 acre Fern Cottage Historic District includes ranch land and 18 buildings. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, "The focal point of the District is Fern Cottage, a settlement-period farmhouse whose architectural and historical integrity are without compromise." Fern Cottage is the fourth and final home of pioneers Zipporah (1839–1929) and Joseph Russ (1825–1886) and their 13 children. Originally called Willow Creek, the cottage was built in 1866 with additions in the late 1800s and 1920. Family members lived in it for over a century.
