National Highway 49 (or NH 49) was a National Highway in southern India under former numbering system.. It traversed coast-to-coast linking Kochi in Kerala with Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu. It crosses the famous Pamban Bridge (Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge) before crossing into Rameswaram island. The total length runs up to 440 km (270 mi). [1] The 5 km road between Mukundarayar Chathiram and Dhanuskodi was destroyed during the 1963 cyclone and was rebuilt.
Government of India has recently announced that the destroyed stretch will be rebuilt at a cost of INR 250 million. The road between Madurai and Ramanathapuram is soon to be converted from the present single road to a four-lane highway. Union minister for road transport and shipping Nitin Gadkari participated in the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Rs 1,387-crore project in Madurai on 17 July 2015. An initial outlay of Rs 900 crore was made and now the project has been sanctioned Rs 1,387 crore. The 75 km stretch from Madurai to Paramakudi will be converted into a four-lane road, while the remaining 39 km stretch from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram widened to form a two-lane road with paved shoulders. Falling under the NH-49, this project is one of the largest to be implemented in Tamil Nadu by the NHAI in the recent times.
Old NH 47 is now NH 85. NH 85 starts from the junction of NH 66 at Kundannoor in Kochi and terminates at Muguntharayar Chattram between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi.

Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is south-east of Pamban and is about 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath. Although devoid of inhabitants, Dhanushkodi remains a tourist attraction due to its historical and mythological relevance.

Ramanathapuram District, also known as Ramnad District, is one of the 38 districts an administrative districts of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The old Ramanathapuram District consists of Present day Virudhunagar and Sivagangai districts, it touches the Western ghats and bordered with the state of Kerala and east by Bay of Bengal. It was the largest district on that time. The town of Ramanathapuram is the district headquarters. Ramanthapuram District has an area of 4,123 km2. It is bounded on the north by Sivaganga District, on the northeast by Pudukkottai District, on the east by the Palk Strait, on the south by the Gulf of Mannar, on the west by Thoothukudi District, and on the northwest by Virudhunagar District. The district contains the Pamban Bridge, an east–west chain of low islands and shallow reefs that extend between India and the island nation of Sri Lanka, and separate the Palk Strait from the Gulf of Mannar. The Palk Strait is navigable only by shallow-draft vessels. As of 2011, Ramanathapuram district had a population of 1,353,445 with a sex-ratio of 983 females for every 1,000 males. The district is home to the pilgrimage centre of Rameswaram and tourist spot Dhanushkodi, an abandoned town.

The total length of the road is about 777 km between Chennai and Kanyakumari.

Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is an island located between peninsular India and Sri Lanka, on the Rama Setu archipelago. The second largest island in the latter, Pamban Island belongs to India and forms the Rameswaram taluk of the Ramanathapuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the largest island in Tamil Nadu by area. The principal town in the island is the pilgrimage centre of Rameswaram.
The Rameswaram Express, previously known as the Boat Mail or Indo-Ceylon Express, is an express train that connects Rameswaram with the state capital Chennai via Tambaram, Chengalpet, Melmaruvattur, Viluppuram, Cuddalore port, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai, Tanjore, Tiruchchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Karaikudi, Sivagangai, Manamadurai, Paramakkudi and Ramanathapuram. During the 1900s, it was a combined train - steamer ferry- Train service between India and Ceylon. Connecting Chennai and Colombo, the system initially utilised a rail-to-sea operation, but changed to a rail-sea-rail operation. Passengers could buy a single ticket for the journey from Chennai to Colombo full stretch over sea journey. After Indian Independence, the ferry service was stopped and Train was running in the name Dhanushkodi Express from Chennai Egmore to Dhanushkodi. After the Cyclones ruined Dhanushkodi, the train service was stopped. Now, it runs from Chennai Egmore to Rameswaram via Villuppuram, Kumbakonam, Tiruchchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Karaikkudi, Devakottai, Manamadurai, Paramakkudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam, and Pamban.
Uchipuli or Uchippuli is a locality in the Mandapam block of Ramanathapuram district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a major source of water supply for the Ramanathapuram town. An Indian Navy air station, INS Parundu, is located near Uchipuli.
Pamban is a town in the Rameswaram taluk of Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. It is at the west edge of Pamban Island and is a popular fishing port. The town gives its name to the whole island. Pamban railway station is the first station on the island for pilgrims travelling to Rameswaram.

The Kochi Bypass is a segment of National Highway 66 that bypasses the CBD of the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. The highway stretches 17 km from Edapally in the Ernakulam district to Aroor in Alappuzha district, via Palarivattom, Vyttila, Kundannoor, Madavana and Kumbalam. The Government of Kerala began the preliminary works in 1973. After a slow progress, it was partially opened for traffic in the beginning years of the 1980s. The section between Edapally and Vyttila had four lanes from the beginning. The rest of the carriageway was also upgraded to different sections of 4 lane, 5 lane and 6 lanes by 2010.

Manamadurai Junction railway station is an NSG–5 category Indian railway station in Madurai railway division of Southern Railway zone. It serves Manamadurai, located in Sivaganga district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the two major railway junctions in Sivaganga district and the other one is Karaikudi Junction. Manamadurai junction is the only four branched junction in the district. It has totally 5 platforms, in which only 3 are functioning and last two are used for docking unscheduled and freight trains.
Madurai railway division is a railway division belonging to the Southern Railways (SR), India. Officially created in 1956, it spans over 1,356 km (843 mi) making it the largest railway division of the Southern Railways. The 5 km road between Mukundarayar Chathiram and Dhanuskodi was destroyed during the 1964 cyclone. Then the Government of India has started construction of the new stretch of road on 2015 and opened to vehicles with some restrictions on Feb'2017 at a cost of ₹ 250 million. At the same time, the road between Madurai and Rameswaram was converted from a two lane road to a four-lane highway. Then Union minister for road transport and shipping Shri.Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for the Rs 1,387-crore project in Madurai on 17 July 2015. An initial outlay of Rs 927 crore was made {May 2019} and the project has been sanctioned for Rs 1,387 crore. Then the first 75km stretch from Madurai to Paramakudi was proposed to be converted into a proper four-lane road which is a Green Highway, while the remaining 39km stretch from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram was widened as a two-lane road with paved shoulders. This road includes bypass from Madurai to Manalur which is a newly constructed route skipping the old route(which runs through Puliyankulam and Silaiman), and has bypasses at several places like Thiruppuvanam, Thiruppachethi, Rajagambiram, Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram which would substantially ease traffic congestion in these towns and also saves time for those tourists who are going to Rameswaram. Falling under the Old NH-49, this project is one of the largest completed green corridor in Tamil Nadu by the National Highways Authority of India in the recent times.
Dhanushkodi railway station is an abandoned railway station in Tamil Nadu, India. It was abandoned during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone. It is one of the two branch lines gets diverted from Pamban Junction one is Pamban Junction–Rameswaram Branch line and the other is Pamban Junction–Dhanushkodi Branch line. A train called Boat mail went from Madras(now Chennai) Egmore Station to Ceylon(now Sri Lanka) with a halt at Dhanushkodi station. It was the prime and most economic way to reach Ceylon.

National Highway 85 is a National Highway in southern India. It links Kochi in Kerala with Thondi, Tamil Nadu. The Kochi–Theni Greenfield Highway has been proposed to decongest the traffic between the Kochi and Munnar stretch on the NH 85.
The Kochi–Theni Greenfield Highway is a 151 kilometre-long planned greenfield controlled-access highway in India, connecting Kochi in Kerala with Theni in Tamil Nadu. The new six lane highway is part of the Kochi - Tuticorin economic corridor which aims at connecting these two major ports enabling smooth movement of cargo between the two. The highway, which will pass through the Western Ghats of Idukki district, will begin from Kundannoor in Kochi and reach Theni almost 67 kilometres lesser than the existing NH 85 alignment and is expected to decongest the 121-km Kochi–Munnar NH 85 stretch.
