Overview

A sculpture Amma ( Thai) by Kanayi Kunhiraman is an attractive feature of the beach garden. [1] A part of the garden is specially for children. Many movies have been shot in this location including the Maniratnam movie Alaipayuthey. [2] The Worldspace ad featuring A.R. Rahman was also shot here.

Graves of Important People

Kannur beach is popular for the graves of some of the most prominent social leaders of Kerala. Leadaers like E. K. Nayanar, [3] Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai, A. K. Gopalan, Pamban Madhavan, Sukumar Azhikode and K. G. Marar are laid to rest near this beach. [1]

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Muzhappilangad Beach is popular for driving because of its hard surface. There is continuous stretch of five kilometers suitable for driving cars and motorbikes. The beach is located on the national highway to Thalassery. This is the longest drive-in beach in India.

Thottada Beach

Thottada Beach is a beautiful beach some 2 km south of Kannur. This beach is 800 meters long and many tourists come here for sunbathing. The Thottada river flows into the beach.

Meenkunnu Beach

Meenkunnu Beach is on the road to Azhikode. This beach is popular among Europeans because of its picture-postcard-looks. There are no facilities on the beach for tourists. It is the favorite of the click happy tourist.

St.Angelo's Fort

Kannur Fort or St.Angelo's Fort is about three km south of Kannur city. This fort was built in 1505 by the Portuguese. The Dutch captured the fort in 1663 and modernized it. In 2015, thousands of abandoned cannonballs were discovered from the fort during an excavation.

The Mappila Bay

The Mappila Bay Harbour and the Arakkal Museum are near the city. There are many beautiful mosques in this area.

The Fort lies on the group of low wooden hill running down to sea and protected by natural waters. It has been the main opening for the rich spices, hill products and timber of the vast inter-land.

Sukumar Azhikode

Koloth Thattarath Sukumaran, popularly known as Sukumar Azhikode was an Indian academic, orator, critic and writer of Malayalam literature, known for his contributions to Malayalam language and insights on Indian philosophy. He was a scholar in Sanskrit, Malayalam, and English languages and his work, Tatvamasi, published in 1984, is a notable work for its detailed interpretation of Indian philosophy, Vedas and Upanishads. He was a recipient of several honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award, Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award and Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award of the Government of Kerala. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2007, which he refused citing the award was a discrimination.

Beaches in Kerala

Beaches in the Indian state of Kerala are spread along the 550-km Arabian Sea coastline. Kerala is an Indian state occupying the south-west corner of the subcontinent. The topography of the coastline is distinctive and changes abruptly as one proceeds from north to south. In the northern parts of Kerala, in places such as Bekal, Thalassery and Kannur, the headlands rise above the shore from the fringe of the beaches. The highlands are dotted with forts built by the colonial powers – the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. The view of the surrounding area is exquisite. From Kozhikode, once the hub of the Malabar coast, the view changes to flat lands with rocky outcroppings jutting out. One feature is common all through – the coconut tree in large numbers. Dense groves of coconut trees line the coast and extend to the interiors.

Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai Indian journalist

K. Ramakrishna Pillai (1878–1916) was a nationalist writer, journalist, editor, and political activist. He edited Swadeshabhimani, the newspaper which became a potent weapon against the rule of the British and the erstwhile princely state of Travancore and a tool for social transformation. His criticism of the Diwan of Travancore, P. Rajagopalachari and the Maharajah led to the eventual confiscation of the newspaper. Ramakrishna Pillai was arrested and exiled from Travancore in 1910. Vrithantha Pathra Pravarthanam (1912) and Karl Marx (1912) are among his most noted works in Malayalam, Vrithantha Pathra pravarthanam being the first book on journalism in Malayalam and Karl Marx, the first ever biography of Karl Marx in any Indian language. But it has been alleged that he plagiarized the biography from an essay, Karl Marx:A Modern Rishi, by Lala Hardayal, published in 1912 March issue of the Modern Review, published from Kolkata.

Melathu Veettil Raghavan was a veteran Communist leader and a former Minister in Kerala state of India. He was the General Secretary of the Communist Marxist Party, an alliance partner in the United Democratic Front. Prior to the formation of the CMP he was a prominent leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
