The first Michelin guide was published to the 'British Isles' in 1911 and originally contained driving information to motorists. It ran for five years until it was suspended during World War I and resumed from 1922 until 1930 now titled 'Great Britain'. In 1974, a new guidebook was released in its modern form, solely a restaurant and hotel guide titled, 'Great Britain and Ireland.' [1]
As of the 2024 guide, there are 165 restaurants in England (including Greater London) with a Michelin-star rating, a rating system used by the Michelin Guide to grade restaurants based on their quality.

The Michelin Guides are a series of guide books that have been published by the French tire company Michelin since 1900. The Guide awards up to three Michelin stars for excellence to a select few restaurants in certain geographic areas. Michelin also publishes the Green Guides, a series of general guides to cities, regions, and countries.
Hakkasan is a Chinese restaurant in Fitzrovia in London, England. It has expanded to many cities worldwide. The restaurant was founded in 2001 by Alan Yau, who was also behind the Wagamama Japanese restaurants and later the Yauatcha restaurant, also in London. It serves modern Cantonese cuisine fused with Western upscale dining experience. The Hakkasan group has branched into hospitality and entertainment including a nightclub opened in Las Vegas.
Aquavit is a Scandinavian restaurant located at 65 East 55th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. In November 2016, an outpost was launched in London by Philip Hamilton.
L'Enclume is a French restaurant opened in 2002 in Cartmel, Cumbria, England, run by the chef Simon Rogan and his partner, Penny Tapsell. L'Enclume received a rating of 10 out of 10 five times in The Good Food Guide and was named their top restaurant for the fourth consecutive year in the 2017 guide, and placed second in the 2018 guide. It has received three Michelin stars and five AA Rosettes.
Le Champignon Sauvage is a restaurant located in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. As of 2008, the restaurant holds two stars in the Michelin Guide. In 1987 the restaurant was opened by husband and wife, David and Helen Everitt-Mattias, initially for a period of three years, but the couple stayed with the restaurant due to high interest rates. To keep costs down, David, the head chef, incorporated cheaper cuts of meat and foraged ingredients on the menu. As of 1 October 2018, the restaurant has been downgraded to 1 Michelin star for the 2019 guide. It is currently the only Michelin starred restaurant in Gloucestershire.
Vineet Bhatia London was a Michelin-starred Indian restaurant operated by Vineet Bhatia in London, England.
The Capital Restaurant was a restaurant located in the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge, London, England. The restaurant was established in 1971 and earned a star from the Michelin Guide under chefs Richard Shepherd and Brian Turner. Other notable chefs who have worked there include Gary Rhodes and Paul Merrett.
Peacock Alley was a restaurant housed in the Fitzwilliam Hotel at St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland from 1999 to 2002. Before that, its location was on Baggot Street in South William Street.
Roscoff Restaurant was a restaurant in 7 Ascot House, Shaftesbury Square, Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1991 and retained that rating until 1998.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is a restaurant in London, England, created by Heston Blumenthal. Menu items are based on historical British dishes, which were researched by food historians and through the British Library. The restaurant's décor resembles antique British periods. Dinner's opening drew interest within the industry, and reviews have been positive. Particular dishes have received praise, including the Meat Fruit, a chicken liver mousse created to look like a mandarin orange.
Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester is a restaurant located in The Dorchester, Park Lane, London. It is one of over 25 restaurants operated by French-born chef Alain Ducasse. As of 2022, the executive chef of the restaurant is Jean-Philippe Blondet, who succeeded Chef Jocelyn Herland. Opened in November 2007, it was awarded three Michelin stars in 2010.
