Comedy Central is a Dutch free-to-air television channel based on the American channel of the same name. The channel is available on cable, digital terrestrial, IPTV, and satellite operators in the Netherlands. It broadcasts many imports as well as original programming. There is another, 24 hours a day broadcasting, Comedy Central channel available in the Netherlands, named Comedy Central Extra . This channel is only available as pay TV.
The Box was originally a Dutch music channel, which allowed viewers to vote on music videos. It launched in June 1995 and was founded by a joint venture between Video Jukebox Network and Quote Media.The Box was taken over by the German music television network VIVA Media in 2002. In June 2004, The Box was acquired by MTV Networks Benelux of Viacom. On 1 December 2006 The Box's airtime was shortened, coinciding with Nickelodeon's move from the channel Talpa (now RTL 8) to The Box channel. The Box was replaced by The Box Comedy with only a program block of The Box during the night.
The Box Comedy was a temporary television channel that was launched in the Netherlands on 1 December 2006. It replaced the music video channel The Box, which used to broadcast music 24 hours a day and the playlist was composed by televoting.It was intended to ease the transition from The Box to Comedy Central. The Box Comedy broadcast shows like SpongeBob SquarePants , Avatar: The Last Airbender , Wayside and My Life As A Teenage Robot . It time-shared with Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon broadcasting in daytime and The Box Comedy in the evenings.
During the night the channel continued to broadcast R&B music under the name The Box. On 30 April 2007, the transition was completed when Comedy Central took control of its airtime.
Comedy Central launched on 30 April 2007, replacing former channel The Box Comedy.Between 2007 and 2010 Comedy Central aired between 8:00 pm and 5:00 am. The programming began after the programming of Nickelodeon.
In October 2008 Comedy Central launched a 24-hour digital sister channel, Comedy Central Family, a close collaboration between MTV Networks and Endemol. The channel was first offered by cable operator Ziggo. After this, other providers followed gradually.
On 4 November 2010 it was announced that Comedy Central would receive more airtime. Comedy Central ceased timesharing with Nickelodeon on 1 January 2011, when Comedy Central moved to the TMF channel. On that channel Comedy Central is broadcasting 15 hours a day, between 15:00 and 06:00 (CET). It replaced TMF in its entirety in 2011. During mornings and early afternoons Kindernet was broadcast between 06:00 and 15:00 (CET).
From 1 October 2012 until 31 October 2013, Comedy Central is broadcasting 21 hours a day, between 09:00 and 06:00 (CET). In the early morning hours Kindernet was broadcast on the same channel between 06:00 and 09:00 (CET).
As of 3 April 2012 Comedy Central is also available in HD.
Since 1 November 2013, Comedy Central is broadcasting 24 hours a day, replacing Kindernet between 06:00 and 09:00 (CET).
From November 2011 the digital channel Comedy Central Extra is broadcast by cable company Ziggo. These broadcasts include the American satirical program The Daily Show and stand-up shows.
On 1 October 2011, Comedy Central underwent a rebranding for the new logo. In 2012 the channel started with HD broadcasts, beginning on April 3, 2012 at UPC and from 2 July 2012 at Ziggo. It is broadcast increasingly in native HD on Comedy Central.
The voice-over since the launch of the channel in 2007 and since the rebrand in 2011 is provided by Joost Griffioen.
Comedy Central Family closed on 31 May 2018. However, some of its programmes moved to Comedy Central Extra.

Television in the Netherlands was officially introduced in 1951. In the Netherlands, the television market is divided between a number of commercial networks, such as RTL Nederland, and a system of public broadcasters sharing three channels, NPO 1, NPO 2, and NPO 3. Imported programmes, as well as news interviews with responses in a foreign language, are almost always shown in their original language, with subtitles.
The Music Factory (TMF) was an originally Dutch brand of television and radio channels operated focusing on pop music. It was similar to the American MTV which took over TMF in 2001.

Launched as MTV Networks Europe (MTVNE) in 1987, with two offices in London and Amsterdam. TMF was a 24-hour music channel operated by Viacom International Media Networks in the Netherlands. The channel was previously in every standard TV package, but it ceased operating on 1 September 2011. The channels operations were based in Amsterdam. The channel was previously known as TMF6 and TMF9.
The Dutch version of Nickelodeon, broadcasting in the Netherlands and through satellite in Belgium, and launched on 14 July 2003. In addition to the general Nickelodeon programmes, local productions such as ZOOP, Het Huis Anubis, Het Huis Anubis en de Vijf van het Magische Zwaard and SuperNick are also broadcast. The Dutch Kids' Choice Awards were presented in 2004, 2005 and 2007, featuring nominees that are relevant to Dutch audiences. In 2010 the American Kids' Choice Awards aired, which included categories for the Netherlands and Belgium inserted into the broadcast.
Ziggo Sport Totaal is a Dutch premium television service operated by Ziggo and owned by VodafoneZiggo, a joint venture between Liberty Global and Vodafone. Ziggo Sport Totaal launched as Sport1 with its sister service Film1 on 1 February 2006 and replaced the Canal+ Netherlands channels. Film1 was sold to Sony Pictures Television on 21 July 2015, while Sport1 remained Liberty Global-owned. At launch the service consisted of two main channels, six extra channels and one HD simulcast of the first main channel. On 2 February 2009 the number of extra channels was reduced to four. The extra channels only broadcast when necessary to live broadcast multiple sport events at the same time. The service was rebranded to Ziggo Sport Totaal on 12 November 2015.
Nickelodeon is a Belgian television channel that is derived from the Dutch Nickelodeon. The channel started in the summer of 2009 when it got its own programming. Via the satellite, the Dutch version is still being broadcast.
The Netherlands now has three major forms of broadcast digital television. Terrestrial (DVB-T), Cable (DVB-C), and Satellite (DVB-S). In addition IPTV services are available. At the end of the first quarter of 2013 almost 84% of the households in the Netherlands had some form of digital television.

MTV Nederland and België is a Dutch speaking free-to-air television channel broadcasting in the Netherlands. It launched as MTV NL on 12 September 2000. Before the start of country-specific channels, the Pan-European version of MTV aired in the Netherlands.
NPO 3 Extra was a Dutch digital theme channel of Dutch public broadcaster BNNVARA, which has been broadcasting since 31 October 2006. The channel could be received via the Internet, as well as digital theme channel via a decoder to the TV. On 10 March 2014, the channel was renamed by NPO 101, before it was called 101 TV.
NPO 1 Extra is a television channel jointly operated by Dutch public broadcasters AVROTROS, BNNVARA, EO, KRO-NCRV and MAX. It was originally launched as HilversumBest on 1 December 2006. NPO 1 Extra presents highlights of more than sixty years of Dutch television history. The channel was founded by Han Peekel. In April 2009 HilversumBest renamed into Best24. On 10 March 2014 the channel changed its name into NPO Best On 26 March 2018 the channel was renamed by NPO 1 Extra.
Comedy Central Family was a television channel broadcasting comedy TV series. It launched in the Netherlands as a joint venture between Viacom International Media Networks and Endemol. It featured both foreign acquisitions and Dutch series from the Endemol libraries.
Viva was a British free-to-air music television channel owned by Viacom International Media Networks Europe. The channel launched on 26 October 2009, replacing TMF, and ceased broadcasting on 31 January 2018.
Kindernet was a Dutch television channel that aired classic and modern children's television series from the 1980s onward.
Despite the success of Nick at Nite in the United States, most international versions of Nickelodeon do not carry their own Nick at Nite programming block, as those local versions of Nickelodeon outside of the United States either carry children's programming 24 hours a day or run a non-Nick at Nite program block during the nighttime hours. While Nick at Nite's U.S. flagship primarily focuses on reruns of discontinued primetime network sitcoms, some of these international versions have aired reruns of discontinued Nickelodeon series.
Cartoon Network is a Dutch television channel which primarily airs animated programming in the Netherlands and Belgium. This version is available in the Dutch and English languages. Some providers offer the Dutch language only.
Disney XD is a Dutch free-to-air television channel owned by The Walt Disney Company. It broadcasts 14 hours a day, time-sharing with Dutch TV station Veronica. The channel used to have a pay-television 24-hours feed that was distributed throughout the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders). However, it closed down on 31 July 2018. Viewers in Belgium (Wallonia) and Luxembourg receive Disney XD France.
TV 538 is a music television channel that airs music videos and live coverage of its radio broadcasts. Dutch radio station Radio 538 launched the TV channel on 4 July 2011. The channel is owned by Talpa Network. It broadcasts 24 hours a day and airs across the Netherlands.
Spike is a Dutch free-to-air television channel in the Netherlands, based on the American rebranded Paramount Network. It was the third Spike channel next to the US and UK version of the channel. The television channel aims at an audience of mainly men. The channel launched on 1 October 2015. Initially it only broadcast daily between 21:00 and 2:30, time-sharing with Nickelodeon. As of 12 December 2016 the channel is broadcasting 24 hours a day in the Netherlands. Until 6 January 2021, the channel was also available in Flanders.
