Miss Grand Angola 2024 was the second edition of the Miss Grand Angola pageant, [1] held on 31 August 2024, at Centro Cultural Paz Flor, Luanda. [2] [3] Thirteen contestants competed for the title. [4] [5]

Contents

The contest was won by Nacira Amaral of Dombe Grande, who was crowned by her predecessor Eugénia das Neves of Luanda. [2] [6] Amal will represent Angola at Miss Grand International 2024 in Thailand on 25 October 2024. [7] [8]

The event featured live performances by five Angolan singers, Button Rose, Rafael Sampaio, Luana Praia, Imah Velosa and Ed Ramiros, [2] [6] and was broadcast worldwide on Facebook and YouTube. [9]

Background

The Miss Grand Angola committee, led by former Miss Grand Angola 2021 Márcia de Menezes, opened an application for the 2024 pageant in June 2024 with a casting conducted on 9 July 2024, at the Mundo Da Casa (MDC) in Luanda. [10] Nineteen candidates qualified for the grand final, [11] six withdrew, making the final of thirteen contestants. [4] [5]

On 17 August 2024, the committee announced that the Paz Flor Cultural Center in Luanda would be the venue for the grand final which on 31 August. [9]

Angola, officially the Republic of Angola, is a country on the west-central coast of Southern Africa. Angola was first settled by San hunter-gatherer societies before the northern domains came under the rule of Bantu states such as Kongo and Ndongo. In the 15th century, Portuguese colonists began trading, and a settlement was established at Luanda during the 16th century. Portugal annexed territories in the region which were ruled as a colony from 1655, and Angola was incorporated as an overseas province of Portugal in 1951. After the Angolan War of Independence, which ended in 1974 with an army mutiny and leftist coup in Lisbon, Angola achieved independence in 1975 through the Alvor Agreement. After independence, Angola entered a long period of civil war that lasted until 2002.

José Eduardo dos Santos was an Angolan politician and military officer who served as the second president of Angola from 1979 to 2017. As president, dos Santos was also the commander-in-chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and president of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the party that has ruled Angola since it won independence in 1975. By the time he stepped down in 2017, he was the second-longest-serving president in Africa, surpassed only by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea.

Miss Grand Angola is a national beauty pageant title awarded to women chosen to represent the Angola at the Miss Grand International contest. The title was first mentioned in 2013 when a 26-year-old model, Nádia de Vasconcelos, was assigned by a London-based event organizer, Beauties of Africa Inc, to represent Angola at the inaugural edition of Miss Grand International in Thailand, but Nádia did not join the contest for undisclosed reasons.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Miss Grand Angola 2023</span> 1st Miss Grand Angola competition, beauty pageant edition

Miss Grand Angola 2023 was the inaugural edition of the Miss Grand Angola pageant, held on September 2, 2023, at the Epic Sana Hotel, Luanda. Ten candidates who qualified for the national final round through an audition held on July 9, 2023, at the Mundo da Casa Shopping Mall (MDC), competed for the title. Of whom, a 24-year-old administrative assistant from Luanda, Eugénia das Neves, was elected the winner. Eugénia later represented the country at the international parent stage, Miss Grand International 2023, held in Vietnam on October 25, 2023, and was named the 5th runner-up.

Ana Bárbara Coimbra is an Angolan model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Angola 2023. She was elected Miss Angola Universe 2023 on Saturday night, July 22, 2023, at the Talatona Convention Center, in Luanda, in a gala that featured musical performance by C4Pedro, in Luanda. The contest featured the participation of various candidates from all over the country, who competed in several stages, with Coimbra standing out among the contestants, winning the title of Miss Angola Universe 2023. After the election, she reiterated her commitment to promoting the country's culture and beauty across borders.

Maria Eugénia "Jenny" da Silva Neto is a Portuguese-Angolan writer. She was the inaugural first lady of Angola. Born in Montalegre, she was educated in Lisbon, studying languages and music. She met Angolan medical student Agostinho Neto in 1948 and ten years later the couple married. Because of his anti-colonial activities, he was jailed multiple times, causing the family to move to Angola, Portugal, Cape Verde, and eventually in 1962 to orchestrate an escape on Moroccan passports to Léopoldville, now in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Léopoldville, he became the head of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola, but the following year, the family moved again to Brazzaville, when the MPLA was ousted. They relocated again to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 1968, where Neto began working with the Organização das Mulheres de Angola, publishing the organization's bulletins and writing radio broadcasts for the MPLA. She also began writing children's stories, but her works were not published at the time.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Miss Grand Brazil 2024</span> 6th edition of the Miss Grand Brazil beauty pageant

Miss Grand Brazil 2024 was the 6th edition of the Miss Grand Brazil pageant, held on August 8, 2024, at the Tokio Marine Hall, São Paulo. Candidates from 27 states and federal district of Brazil competed for the title. Of whom, a 27-year-old model representing Rio Grande do Sul, Talita Hartmann, was named the winner and received R$ 200,000 cash prize as the reward. Hartmann will represent the country at the international parent stage, Miss Grand International 2024.
