Miss Grand South Sudan is a national beauty pageant title awarded to women selected to represent South Sudan at the Miss Grand International pageant. [1] [2] [3] [4] The title was first awarded in 2014 on the stage of Beauties of South Sudan (B.O.S.S.) which was a national pageant held by former Miss World South Sudan, Atong Demach. [5] However, the first titleholder, Akan William, did not compete internationally due to her university study issues. [6] The partnership between the B.O.S.S. and the Miss Grand International firm was terminated in 2018; since then, to date, no South Sudanese representatives have additionally been sent to compete.

Contents

South Sudan participated in the Miss Grand International pageant from 2014 to 2017; the highest and only achievement of the country was the top 10 finalist, obtained in 2017 by a South Sudanese American model, Eyga Mojus. [3] [7]

History

In 2014, the license of Miss Grand South Sudan was obtained by a 2013-established national pageant, Beauties of South Sudan (B.O.S.S.), where the main winners were sent to compete at another international contest, Miss Earth, and each of the vice-misses was sent to either Miss International or Miss Grand International. [5] In the 2014 national contest held at Freedom Hall in Juba, a third-year student of Uganda Christian University, Akan William, was elected Miss Grand South Sudan 2014 and was expected to partake in the Miss Grand International 2014 pageant in Thailand; [5] however, she later withdrew due to university study issues, [6] which caused the licensee to appoint a Juba-based model, Diana Stevens, to compete internationally instead. [8]

In 2015, due to losing the Miss Earth franchise caused by failing to send a representative in the previous year, Siran Samuel, who was the Beauties of South Sudan 2014 winner but failed to attend Miss Earth 2014, was instead set to partake in the Miss Grand International 2015. [1] Initially, the director Atong Demach, planned to send her to compete for the Miss Earth 2015 title, but the franchise was later taken over by another domestic organizer. [1] However, Miss Samuel was stripped of her title as Miss Grand South Sudan in June of that year, [1] and former Miss Grand South Sudan 2014, Akan William, was appointed as her replacement. [6]

Since the B.O.S.S. lost the Miss Earth franchise in 2015, no national pageant has been held; the country representatives for Miss Grand International were handpicked instead, [2] [3] and the partnership between the B.O.S.S. and Miss Grand International was discontinued in 2018.

In 2023, after five consecutive years of absence, Amylia Deng was appointed to compete at Miss Grand International 2023 in Vietnam but withdrew due to visa issues. [4]
