The Scottish Vegetarian Society (SVS) was an organisation based in Glasgow, Scotland, that promoted vegetarianism in Scotland. It was founded in 1892 and became a part of the Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom in the 1980s.
Through the efforts of Joseph Knight of the Manchester Vegetarian Society, [1] the Scottish Vegetarian Society was formed in November 1892 in Glasgow at the Garden Vegetarian Restaurant, with the aim of promoting a vegetarian lifestyle. The Society was established on a foundation that required all officers to be vegetarians, and its first chairman was H. S. Bathgate, [2] who also served as its first president until 1929, when he served as honorary president. [3] The Society's head office was located at 6 Jamaica Street in Glasgow. [4]
The Society's first secretary and treasurer was John Barclay, a vegetarian athlete. [4] Barclay was associated with the Vegetarian Cycling and Athletic Club. In 1897, at the annual meeting of the Scottish Vegetarian Society in Glasgow, Barclay was awarded a massive travelling trunk as a recognition of his devoted efforts to promote vegetarianism. [4] In 1903, the Society launched its magazine Health, Food and Cookery which was edited by Charles A. Hall. [5] The group held its first banquet in 1893 and regularly hosted gatherings that featured meals, music, and lectures promoting vegetarianism. [2] In its inaugural year, the Society had just 19 members, and by 1933, the membership had still not surpassed 300. [3] Its headquarters were located in the Athenaeum building on Buchanan Street, Glasgow. [1]
Throughout its history, the Society was actively involved in food reform advocacy. It supported the first meeting of the International Vegetarian Union (IVU) in 1908 and hosted successful "At Home" events and cookery lectures in Glasgow. Dugald Semple, a key figure in the Society, who later served as president, became an advocate for simple living and gave lectures on vegetarianism. By 1912, the Society had formally affiliated with the Manchester Vegetarian Society, along with other local Scottish societies in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Dundee. [2]
During World War I, Dugald Semple helped promote meat substitutes to cope with rationing. Semple also represented Scotland at international vegetarian congresses, advocating for the connection between vegetarianism and peace. [2]
The Society continued its advocacy post-war and maintained its presence in the vegetarian movement through participation in various congresses and ongoing promotion of vegetarian principles. [2] In the 1980s, the Society eventually became the Glasgow branch of the Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom. [3] Since then, a new Scottish Vegetarian Association was formed. [2]

Dugald Patterson McDougall Semple was a Scottish advocate of simple living and animal welfare, naturalist, prolific author, and fruitarian. He is sometimes credited with co-founding the vegan movement in 1944 without using the term "vegan".
The World Esperantist Vegetarian Association is a voluntary association of Esperanto-speaking vegetarians. Founded in 1908, the group's working language is Esperanto, and it is the oldest international organization of vegetarians that is currently active. TEVA published a journal, Vegetarano ("Vegetarian") from 1914 to 1932, revived in 2009 as Esperantista Vegetarano, and has also operated a spirited Internet mailing list through Yahoo! Henry Stephen Clubb was an English-American Bible Christian minister, activist, journalist, author, Civil War veteran, and Michigan State Senator. Born in Colchester, England, Clubb advocated for various causes, including abolitionism, vegetarianism, and Chartism. He emigrated to the United States in 1852, where he worked as a journalist and was involved in efforts to establish a utopian community, known as Octagon City, Kansas. During the American Civil War, Clubb served in the Union Army as a quartermaster, including during the Siege of Vicksburg. From 1873 to 1874, he represented Michigan's 29th Senate district. Clubb also led the Bible Christian Church in Philadelphia and founded the Vegetarian Society of America, serving as its president. In 1903, he published his best-known work, Thirty-nine Reasons Why I Am a Vegetarian.
Albert Broadbent was an English activist, writer, editor, publisher, lecturer, and restaurateur. Broadbent was a prominent advocate of vegetarianism. He served as Secretary of the Vegetarian Society and edited The Vegetarian Messenger and Health Review, playing a significant role in promoting vegetarianism on an international level. His work included extensive lecturing, producing publications advocating for a vegetarian diet, and the establishment of vegetarian restaurants aimed at improving women's social standing and providing affordable meals to poor people.
Carrica Le Favre was an American physical culturist, dress reform advocate and vegetarianism activist. She founded the Chicago Vegetarian Society and the New York Vegetarian Society.

RobertElliott O'Callaghan (1855–1936) was an English vegetarianism activist, lecturer, and writer. He became a prominent vegetarian advocate after being inspired by Francis William Newman. Edward Dolby Shelton was an English printer, publisher, and activist. He was known for his advocacy of temperance and vegetarianism. Shelton's career included managing Alexander Thomson's printing business in Manchester and co-running a printing and publishing venture on the Isle of Wight. He notably managed the Ventnor Vegetarian Hotel there, which hosted prominent figures like Mahatma Gandhi. Later in life, he focused on business and church activities in Ely, Cambridgeshire, while continuing to promote vegetarianism alongside his wife, Frances.
