Southampton College (also known as Southampton Campus, Golf Grounds, and Shinnecock Hills) was a Long Island Rail Road station along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, located in Shinnecock Hills, Suffolk County, New York, United States.
Originally a seasonal flag stop called Golf Grounds, the station opened April 1907 to serve sites such as the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and National Golf Links of America and was closed in 1938. [1]
In order to serve the Long Island University's Southampton College (now owned by Stony Brook University) it reopened as Southampton College on May 24, 1976. [1] [2] [3] [4]
In 1986, the Long Island Rail Road also provided service for spectators traveling to the 1986 U.S. Open, using this station for the game services. [2]
On March 16, 1998, the station was once again discontinued as a station stop and was subsequently demolished – along with a handful of other Long Island Rail Road stations – due to low ridership. [3] At the time, the station had an average daily ridership of 16 passengers, and the low ridership did not make it cost effective for high level platforms to be installed to accommodate the LIRR's new C3 bilevel rail cars, which require such platforms. A temporary station with a high level platform was opened at this location in June 2004 for the U.S. Open and was listed as Shinnecock Hills on special timetables. [6] The same situation occurred in 2018 during the 2018 U.S. Open Golf Championship. [5] [7] [8]
The station had 1 low level side platform. [3] [4] As the newer C3 railcars required high level platforms at stations, the trains would not be able to serve the station without building a new, high level platform to replace the existing low level one. [3] [4]
The temporary station in June 2018 had a 10-car high-level platform. [5]

The Montauk Branch is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The line runs the length of Long Island, 115 miles (185 km) from Long Island City to Montauk. However, in LIRR maps and schedules for public use, the term Montauk Branch refers to the line east of Babylon; service from Jamaica to Babylon is covered by separate Babylon Branch schedules, while the line west of Jamaica is currently unused for passenger service. Belmont Park is a seasonal-use Long Island Rail Road station on the grounds of the Belmont Park racetrack in the New York City borough of Queens. The station is a terminus of a spur line that lies south of and between the Queens Village and Elmont–UBS Arena stations on the Main Line/Hempstead Branch. The Richmond Hill station is a closed station on the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens in New York City. The station is located at Myrtle Avenue and cuts diagonally from the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard through to Hillside Avenue. The station has two tracks and an island platform. Richmond Hill was the only station on the Lower Montauk Branch that was elevated with a high-level platform for passengers to wait for trains; the others were at ground level, with low-level platforms.
Fresh Pond was a Long Island Rail Road station along the Lower Montauk Branch, located on an open cut near Fresh Pond Road and Metropolitan Avenue in Fresh Pond, Queens, on the border between the neighborhoods of Maspeth and Ridgewood.
Glendale was a Long Island Rail Road station along the Lower Montauk Branch, located in Glendale, Queens at Edsall Avenue and 73rd Street, near Central Avenue, at the All Faiths Monuments factory for the All Faiths Cemetery. This station had two "platforms" which were just strips of pavement besides the tracks signed as the station, and two tracks.
Republic was a station stop along the Ronkonkoma Branch which served employees of the Fairchild Engine & Airplane Manufacturing Company and the nearby Republic Airport from 1940 to the late 1980s. As part of a double-tracking project on the line, the station may be reopened.

The Cannonball is a seasonal named train operated by the Long Island Rail Road between Penn Station in New York City and Montauk on the east end of Long Island, New York. The train operates weekly between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend, operating eastbound on Fridays and westbound on Sundays, with westbound service also being offered through Columbus Day weekend. The train utilizes dual-mode DM30AC locomotives and C3 coaches, the same rolling stock as other LIRR diesel and dual-mode trains, and takes slightly less than three hours to travel the 118-mile (190 km) route.
