Brentwood is a station on the Main Line (Ronkonkoma Branch) of the Long Island Rail Road. It is officially located at Suffolk County Road 100 (Suffolk Avenue) and Brentwood Road in Brentwood, New York. However, it has parking facilities and other amenities that are extended far beyond its given location. The actual station is located across the tracks from the dead end of Eighth Street near Leroy Avenue. The parking lot entrance is on Suffolk Avenue 1⁄2 mile (0.80 km) east of Brentwood Road/Washington Avenue.

History

The first station was originally known as Modern Times station and was renamed Brentwood on September 7, 1864. The post office moved here from Thompson's station on January 17, 1870. Inhabitants donated land and money for the depot which was erected in 1870.^[3] The depot was burned in April 1903 and was replaced on November 10, 1903. Until 1987, Brentwood station was located on First Avenue between Fourth Street and Brentwood Road. It was moved as part of a major electrification and reconstruction project of the line in Ronkonkoma, Central Islip, Brentwood, Deer Park, and Wyandanch. Originally, the LIRR had planned to merge Deer Park, Pineaire, and Brentwood stations into a single station, but residential opposition blocked that proposal, and only Deer Park and Pineaire were merged. The current station was built close to the former Brentwood station, which was converted into a restaurant shortly after it was abandoned. All grade crossings in the Brentwood area remained unchanged after the station was moved.^[4]

Thompson's station

Prior to the construction of Brentwood station, another station existed in Brentwood where the Sagtikos State Parkway now crosses over the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. This was known as Thompson's station or Thompson's Siding, and served as a private home, a station, an Inn, and a general store. It was opened as a station on June 24, 1842, with the arrival of the railroad, and closed in December 1869, before Brentwood station was built further east.^[3] The railroad spur continued to exist through the 20th Century and was used as a freight spur which served industries such as Hills Supermarkets, Thompson Tires and Carnation Paper.^[5] The site was replaced with the former Pineaire in 1915, until it was closed in 1986 and combined into the new Deer Park west of Sagtikos State Parkway.^{[ citation needed ]}

The Ronkonkoma Branch is a rail service operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the U.S. state of New York. On LIRR maps and printed schedules, the "Ronkonkoma Branch" includes trains running along the railroad's Main Line from Hicksville to Ronkonkoma, and between Ronkonkoma and the Main Line's eastern terminus at Greenport. The section of the Main Line east of Ronkonkoma is not electrified and is referred to as the Greenport Branch.

The Main Line is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. It begins as a two-track line at Long Island City station in Long Island City, Queens, and runs along the middle of Long Island about 95 miles (153 km) to Greenport station in Greenport, Suffolk County. At Harold Interlocking approximately one mile east of Long Island City, the tracks from the East River Tunnels and 63rd Street Tunnel into Manhattan intersect with the Main Line, which most trains use rather than using the Long Island City station.

Patchogue is a station of the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road in Patchogue, New York. It is on Division Street between West Avenue and South Ocean Avenue. The station is the eastern terminus for some trains on the branch.

Medford is a station in the hamlet of Medford, New York on the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. Medford is located on New York State Route 112 between Peconic Avenue and Long Island Avenue. Access to the station is available from a narrow curving roadway leading off Route 112. This roadway used to connected with the Ohio Avenue intersection until Ohio Avenue was closed north of Peconic Avenue in 2007. It is also accessible from the north end of Oregon Avenue, although the Medford Fire Department periodically closes the Oregon Avenue access road for drills or other exercises.

St. James is a station and historic landmark on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The station is located on Lake Avenue and Railroad Avenue, just south of New York State Route 25A in St. James, Suffolk County, New York.

Ronkonkoma is a major railroad station and transportation hub along the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road in Ronkonkoma, New York. The station is the eastern terminus of the Ronkonkoma Branch and the western terminus of the Greenport Branch, and it also serves the adjacent Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Central Islip is a station on the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. It is at the southwest corner of Suffolk County Road 100 and Lowell Avenue in Central Islip, New York. Pinelawn is a railroad station along the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located on Long Island Avenue, just east of the Wellwood Avenue grade crossing in East Farmingdale, New York.

Republic was a station stop along the Ronkonkoma Branch which served employees of the Fairchild Engine & Airplane Manufacturing Company and the nearby Republic Airport from 1940 to the late 1980s. As part of a double-tracking project on the line, the station may be reopened.

Cutchogue was a station stop along the Greenport Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It was located on Depot Lane in Cutchogue, New York, a street that was named for the station.
