From 16 to 18 September 2025, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, will make a state visit to the United Kingdom with his wife, the first lady of the United States, Melania Trump. He will be received by King Charles III and stay at Windsor Castle. [1]
This will be Trump's second state visit to the United Kingdom, which will occur during his second presidency, with the first occurring in June 2019 when he was received by Queen Elizabeth II during his first presidency. [1] A second state visit by an American president was described by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as "historic" and "unprecedented". Presidents are typically invited for tea with the British monarch if they visit the United Kingdom for a second time during their term of office. [2] Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, who served their respective second terms consecutively, were not invited for a second state visit. [3] It had previously been announced that the visit would take place from 17 to 19 September 2025. [4]
Trump and his wife, the First Lady of the United States Melania Trump landed at Stansted Airport and were met by the Ambassador of the United States to the Court of St James's, Warren Stephens, upon their arrival in the United Kingdom. [5] The lord-in-waiting, Henry Hood, 8th Viscount Hood, would welcome the couple on behalf of Charles III. [5] The U.S. President and First Lady would stay at Winfield House, the official London residence of the U.S. ambassador which is located in Regent's Park. [5]
The Trumps will be greeted by William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales at Windsor Castle before being welcomed by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. [1] A royal salute will be fired at the castle and the Tower of London. [6] The couple will then have lunch with members of the British royal family and they are expected to visit and lay a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II at the King George VI Memorial Chapel at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. [1] [6] A flypast of the Red Arrows and F-35 jets will occur. [6] British and American musicians are expected to perform a special Beating Retreat military ceremony, marking the first time it will be performed at a state visit. [5] On Wednesday evening, a traditional state banquet will be held in St George's Hall at the castle, during which both the King and president will deliver speeches. [1]
The president and first lady will formally bid farewell to the King and Queen at Windsor Castle in the morning. [7] President Trump will travel to meet the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer at Chequers, the country house of the prime minister in Buckinghamshire. The president and the prime minister will view the Winston Churchill archives at Chequers before their meeting and a joint news conference. [1]
The first lady will join Queen Camilla for a tour of Queen Mary's Dolls' House and the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, followed by a scouting event on the castle's grounds with the Princess of Wales. [8] The princess is the joint president of The Scout Association. [1] The first lady will then travel to Chequers to join her husband before their departure to the United States. [1]
Several days after the state visit was announced, Conservative Party Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Alicia Kearns demanded Prime Minister Starmer cancel the state visit. [9] Following the Trump–Zelenskyy Oval Office meeting, Scottish First Minister John Swinney called for Trump's state visit to be cancelled if the U.S. ends support for Ukraine. [10]
By March 2025, a petition calling for the cancellation of Donald Trump's state visit to the UK had reached 250,000 signatures. [11]
On 15 September 2025, members of the UK collective Everyone Hates Elon installed a 400-square-metre print of a widely circulated photograph of Trump and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whose relationship had been the source of major controversy earlier in the year, on the lawns of Windsor Castle. [12] Four people were arrested on 16 September after further images of Trump and Epstein were projected onto the external walls of the castle. [13] Earlier that month, a major scandal occurred in the UK surrounding Peter Mandelson's relationship with Epstein, which led to Starmer dismissing him from his diplomatic post. [14]
A "Trump Not Welcome" demonstration will be held in London on 17 September by the Stop Trump Coalition. [1] The coalition has accused Trump of "denying climate science" and "siding with war criminals - in Israel, Russia and beyond" and asked the British government to cancel the state visit. [1]
The banquet at Windsor Castle will be boycotted by Ed Davey, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats in protest at Trump's policies toward the Gaza Strip and the ongoing humanitarian crisis there. [2] Davey said that Trump "has the power to stop the horrifying starvation and death in Gaza and get the hostages released" due to his influence over Israel, Qatar and the Gulf states. [2]
The United Kingdom branch of Republicans Overseas however, hosted a reception at Windsor Guildhall. [15]
