John Sampson Macfarlane Leech is a British Liberal Democrat politician who was Member of Parliament for Manchester Withington from 2005 to 2015. Since 2016, he has represented Didsbury West on Manchester City Council.
Matthew James Offord is a British Conservative Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hendon in North London from 2010 to 2024. He was previously a member of the Association of European Parliamentarians with Africa Governing Council.
Membership and supporter status within political parties in the United Kingdom typically contain restrictions including:
The 2019 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 12 December 2019, with 47,074,800 registered voters entitled to vote to elect 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons. The governing Conservative Party, led by the prime minister Boris Johnson, won a landslide victory with a majority of 80 seats, a net gain of 48, on 43.6 per cent of the popular vote, the highest percentage for any party since the 1979 general election, though with a narrower popular vote margin than that achieved by the Labour Party over the Conservatives at the 1997 general election. This was the second national election to be held in 2019 in the United Kingdom, the first being the 2019 European Parliament election.
The 2019 European Parliament election was the United Kingdom's component of the 2019 European Parliament election. It was held on Thursday 23 May 2019 and the results announced on Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May 2019, after all the other EU countries had voted. This was the United Kingdom's final participation in a European Parliament election before leaving the European Union on 31 January 2020; it was also the last election to be held under the provisions of the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2002 before its repeal under the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, and was the first European election in the United Kingdom since 1999 to be held on a day that did not coincide with any local elections. This was the first of two national elections held in the United Kingdom in 2019; the 2019 general election occurred six-and-a-half months later in December 2019.
The 2021 Senedd election took place on Thursday 6 May 2021 to elect 60 members to the Senedd. It was the sixth devolved general election since the Senedd was established in 1999. The election was held alongside the Scottish Parliament election, English local elections, London Assembly and mayoral election and the Hartlepool by-election.
On 1 December 2016, a by-election was held in the UK parliamentary constituency of Richmond Park. It was triggered by the resignation of the Conservative Member of Parliament Zac Goldsmith on 25 October 2016 over the Government's proposal for a third runway at the nearby Heathrow Airport. It was won by Sarah Olney of the Liberal Democrats, after a campaign focused on opposition to Brexit.
Various newspapers, organisations and individuals endorsed parties or individual candidates for the 2017 general election.
A progressive alliance in the UK is a cross-party political alliance supporting "progressive politics", generally in opposition to right-wing parties, chiefly the Conservative Party.
People's Vote was a United Kingdom campaign group that unsuccessfully campaigned for a second referendum following the UK's Brexit vote to leave the European Union (EU) in 2016. The group was launched in April 2018 at which four Members of Parliament spoke, along with the actor Patrick Stewart and other public figures.
Reform UK, colloquially known as Reform, is a right-wing populist political party in the United Kingdom. Nigel Farage has served as the party's leader since June 2024 and Richard Tice has served as the party's deputy leader since July 2024. The party currently has five members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons and one member of the London Assembly. The party also holds representation at the local government level, with most of its local councillors having defected from the Conservative Party to Reform UK. Following Farage's resumption of the leadership during the 2024 general election, there was a sharp increase in support for the party. In the election it was the third largest party by popular vote, with 14.3 per cent of the vote.
Change UK, founded as The Independent Group (TIG) and later The Independent Group for Change, was a British centrist, pro–European Union political party, which lasted for ten months in 2019. Established in February and formally recognized as a party in May, it was dissolved in December after all its MPs lost their seats at that year's general election. Its principal aim was a second withdrawal referendum on European Union membership, in which it would campaign to remain in the EU. On economic issues it expressed a commitment to the social market economy.
A referendum on the Brexit withdrawal agreement, also referred to as a "second referendum", a "rerun", a "people's vote", or a "confirmatory public vote", was proposed by a number of politicians and pressure groups as a way to break the deadlock during the 2017–19 Parliament surrounding the meaningful vote on the Brexit deal.
Various newspapers, organisations and individuals endorsed parties or individual candidates for the 2019 European Parliament election in the United Kingdom.
This is a list of endorsements for declared candidates for the 2019 leadership election for the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom.
A by-election was held in the United Kingdom Parliament constituency of Chesham and Amersham on 17 June 2021, following the death of the sitting member, Dame Cheryl Gillan, on 4 April 2021. Gillan had served as MP for the constituency since 1992. The by-election was the third to the 58th Parliament, which was elected in 2019.
Various newspapers, organisations and individuals endorsed parties or individual candidates for the 2024 United Kingdom general election.
Mr Etheridge is now endorsing the Tories. "I will be voting Conservative at this election," he said. "Boris Johnson's deal is far from perfect, but it is better than anything else we are likely to get."
However, our research has led us to the conclusion that, with the exception of a few seats, there's only one party for Brexiteers to vote for at this election: the Conservatives.
in the remaining days before polling day, we will be pushing hard for the DUP across Northern Ireland
We'll also be supporting the Brexit Party in Barnsley
Former deputy Prime Minister and People's Vote campaigner Michael Heseltine has promised to visit Beaconsfield to support rebel Remainer Dominic Grieve.
Sir John urged voters to support three pro-European former ministers — Dominic Grieve, David Gauke and Anne Milton ... In separate statements endorsing each candidate, Lord Patten added that they represented 'what the Conservative party has stood for during decades of success: a moderate, decent, socially inclusive and internationalist political movement'.
Grieve is among the handful of MPs who has done the most to prevent Brexit happening. From an ethical point of view he has to be backed.
We'll also be supporting ... the former Labour MP Frank Field in Birkenhead
Plucky former Tory Remainer Anna Soubry is being backed by Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff in her battle for Broxtowe.
with the exception of Fermanagh and South Tyrone where we're backing the Ulster Unionists
We will not be campaigning unless in exceptional circumstances and for exceptional candidates, like our Parliamentary Chair Ruth Smeeth
