Ohio was narrowly won by the Republican Party candidate and native son, James A. Garfield, won the state with 51.73% of the popular vote. The Democratic Party candidate, Winfield Scott Hancock, garnered 47.01% of the popular vote. [1]

Garfield defeated Winfield Scott Hancock of the Democratic Party. The voter turnout rate was one of the highest in the nation's history. Garfield was assassinated during his first year in office, and he was succeeded by his vice president, Chester A. Arthur.
