The 2014 Cuyahoga County executive election took place on November 4, 2014, to elect the County Executive of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Incumbent Democratic County Executive Ed FitzGerald was eligible to run for reelection, but instead retired in order to run unsuccessfully for governor in the concurrent gubernatorial election. [2]

Contents

The Democrats nominated former Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives Armond Budish, while the Republicans nominated Cuyahoga County Councilman Jack Schron. [3]

Budish defeated Schron 59.52% to 40.48%, and took office on January 1, 2015.

He was the first Jewish representative to hold that office. He was re-elected to the House in 2010 and 2012, and thereafter was term-limited.

The County Executive of Cuyahoga County, the second largest county in Ohio, and the 29th largest county by population in the United States, is the elected chief executive of the Cuyahoga County government. Democrat Chris Ronanye is the current county executive. The county charter stipulates that the executive is responsible for the appointment and removal of county personnel, working with other local governments, introducing legislation to the county council, submitting budgets and capital improvements plans to the council, and many other duties.

The Ohio general elections, 2014 were held on November 4, 2014, throughout Ohio, with polls opened between 6:30AM and 7:30PM. The close of registration for electors in the primary election was April 7, 2014, and the primary election day took place on May 6, 2014.

Kent Smith is the Senator of the 21st district of the Ohio Senate. Smith is a resident of Euclid, Ohio, and previously served as a Representative in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015-2022 and on the Euclid School Board for 12 years. He also served as head of the Democratic Party for Euclid, and has a degree from the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University. In 2014, Smith opted to run for the Ohio House of Representatives to replace Armond Budish, who was term-limited and sought election instead as Cuyahoga County Executive. He faced Republican Mikhail Alterman and Independent Jocelyn Conwell, and won with 71.47% of the vote. He would go on to be re-elected in 2016 and 2018.
