Heart Coffee Roasters is a small specialty coffee roasting company with cafes in Portland, Oregon, United States. It was established in 2009 by Wille and Rebekah Yli-Luoma.
Wille and Rebekah Yli-Luoma opened Heart in 2009. [1] [2] Heart's original location, known as the Eastside Cafe, is located at 2211 East Burnside Street in Portland's Kerns neighborhood. [2] Its second location, known as the Westside Cafe, opened in 2013 and is located at 537 Southwest 12th Avenue in downtown Portland's West End. [3] [4] The company has leased a third location at the intersection of Southeast 52nd Avenue and Woodstock Boulevard, in the Woodstock neighborhood. [5]
Condé Nast Traveler called Heart's drinks "uncommonly clean and complex and said, "Chemex- and Aeropress-brewed 'pour-over' coffees are perhaps the best way to sample the results, though espresso drinks are excellent here, too." [2]
In 2013, Dan Gentile of Thrillist included Heart in his list of "The Top 10 Coffee Roasters in the Nation, as Voted by Super-Serious Coffee Nerds". [6] He also included Heart in his 2016 list of "The 21 Best Coffee Roasters in the Country", writing: "Portland isn't in short supply of sleekly designed coffee shops, but in addition to a design sense that would make a Scandinavian proud, Heart's coffee shop is literally built around a functioning black Probat roaster that fills the space with the smell of not-too-light, and definitely not-too-dark coffees." In 2016, Eater.com's Emily McIntyre included Heart on her list of the "20 of the Best Coffee Shops in Portland". She wrote:
Few cafes have such a strong aesthetic and presentation as Heart on Burnside. Enter and think yourself lucky, because the rare espresso machine (currently Kees van der Westen), the expansive, simple menu, the beast of a vintage coffee roaster, and the 'do not touch signs' have the effect of creating an exclusive experience... While I recommend any seasonal drink here (and the summertime paleo affogato is delicious), my go-to at Heart is a cup of drip coffee. [1]

Verve Coffee Roasters is a coffee roaster based in Santa Cruz, California, founded by Colby Barr and Ryan O'Donovan. Verve opened in November, 2007 in Pleasure Point, California. The company currently operates in several California-based locations, including four in Santa Cruz, four in Los Angeles, one in San Francisco, one in Manhattan Beach, one in Palo Alto, and two in Menlo Park at the campuses of Meta and SLAC. They also have four locations in Japan: one at the Shinjuku, Tokyo train station, one in the Roppongi district of Tokyo, one in Kamakura, and a cafe/roastery in the Kanagawa Prefecture. Verve earned the highest score in the coffee category at the Good Food Awards in 2013 and was also named one of the top coffee roasters in the United States by Thrillist, Complex Magazine, and Food Republic In 2018, they won the Best Espresso at the Coffee Spot Awards, and in 2021 be nominated for the cafe in Japan at the World Latitude Caffe Prize.
Roman Candle Baking Co., or simply Roman Candle, was a bakery and pizzeria–restaurant in the Richmond neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Duane Sorenson opened Roman Candle in 2013, with a menu offering wood-fired pizza and other Italian cuisine, including sandwiches, breads, green salads, pastries, and baked potatoes. Dan Griffin and Joshua McFadden served as the baker and chef, respectively. The bakery started supplying select menu items to Sorenson's Stumptown Coffee Roasters locations in late 2015. Roman Candle received a generally positive reception, with the pizzas and kouign-amann receiving the most praise. The restaurant closed in April 2018 for renovations, ahead of a rebrand as a gluten-free and vegan cafe called Holiday, which Sorenson launched one month later.
Southeast Grind was a coffeehouse in Portland, Oregon's Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood, in the United States. Opened by owner Kacey Birch in 2009, Southeast Grind was the city's only coffee shop operating 24 hours a day, as of 2019. Besides coffee and espresso drinks, the coffeehouse served juices, smoothies, teas, pastries, quesadillas, salads, sandwiches, and other snacks. Southeast Grind was described as a "safe, reliable spot", a "living room", and a "respite" for a diverse clientele, especially students. It closed in October 2019 because of lease issues, renovations required to address the building's structural problems and Birch's desire to focus on family.

Sarah and Nick Iannarone established Arleta in 2005, and it closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Guy Fieri visited the restaurant for an episode of the Food Network's television show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
