History

Water Avenue Coffee was established in 2009. [2] The business launched a mobile coffee truck in 2013. [3] Water Avenue signed a lease on a new roasting facility at Southeast 8th and Main in 2015, joining the flagship cafe Water Avenue and Southeast Taylor. [4] [5] The business also began selling barrel-aged coffee in 2015. [6] Chef Ryan Kennedy launched an expanded food menu at the Water Avenue cafe in 2016. [7]

In 2016, Water Avenue Coffee opened a second coffee bar at Sixth at Yamhill in downtown Portland. [2] [8]

Reception

Brittany Fowler selected Water Avenue Coffee to represent Portland in Business Insider 's 2015 list of "The best coffee shops in 13 major cities around the US". [9] Willamette Week included the downtown location in a 2016 list of "Our Favorite 11 New Cafes and Roasters in Portland". [10] Samantha Bakall included the business in The Oregonian 's 2017 list of "Downtown Portland's 10 best coffee shops". [11]

In 2015, the restaurant was split in half, and one side of the space began serving brunch, lunch, and happy hour as the Palmetto Cafe. The Palmetto was converted into a private event space and pop-up restaurant in February 2016, and The Parish closed abruptly in September of that year.

Roman Candle Baking Co., or simply Roman Candle, was a bakery and pizzeria–restaurant in the Richmond neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Duane Sorenson opened Roman Candle in 2013, with a menu offering wood-fired pizza and other Italian cuisine, including sandwiches, breads, green salads, pastries, and baked potatoes. Dan Griffin and Joshua McFadden served as the baker and chef, respectively. The bakery started supplying select menu items to Sorenson's Stumptown Coffee Roasters locations in late 2015. Roman Candle received a generally positive reception, with the pizzas and kouign-amann receiving the most praise. The restaurant closed in April 2018 for renovations, ahead of a rebrand as a gluten-free and vegan cafe called Holiday, which Sorenson launched one month later.
