The 1954 Texas gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 1954, to elect the governor of Texas. Incumbent Democratic Governor Allan Shivers was overwhelmingly reelected in the general election after defeating future Senator Ralph Yarborough in the Democratic primary.

The 1972 Texas gubernatorial election was held on November 7, 1972, to elect the Governor of Texas. Incumbent Democratic Governor Preston Smith was running for reelection, but was defeated in the Democratic primary by businessman Dolph Briscoe. Briscoe went on to win the election by a relatively small margin, winning 48% of the vote to Republican Henry Grover's 45%. Raza Unida candidate Ramsey Muniz won 6%.

The 1957 United States Senate special election in Texas was held on April 2, 1957 to complete the unexpired term of Senator Price Daniel, who resigned to become Governor of Texas. Interim Senator William Blakley did not run for re-election. The race was won by Ralph Yarborough with a plurality of the vote; no majority was required.
