Successful stars of the year

1. Jeetendra- He had an extremely successful year with box office smashes like Himmatwala, Mawaali , Justice Chaudhary and Jaani Dost .

2. Amitabh Bachchan- Apart from starring in the top grossing Coolie, Bachchan had only one hit- Andhaa Kanoon, in which he made an extended special appearance. His other films Pukar and Nastik were average grossers.

3. Shammi Kapoor- The veteran Kapoor continued his second innings with pivotal roles in launchpad vehicles Betaab and Hero.

4. Hema Malini- Malini featured in a supporting role in Justice Chaudhary and played strong characters in Andhaa Kanoon and Nastik.

5. Sridevi- It was a breakthrough year for Sridevi as she featured in four hits- Himmatwala, Mawaali, Justice Chaudhary and Jaani Dost, all of them opposite Jeetendra.

6. Dharmendra- He starred in Naukar Biwi Ka and in Jaani Dost with Jeetendra.

Kader Khan was an Indian actor, screenwriter and film producer. As an actor, he appeared in over 300 Bollywood films after his debut film in the 1973 film Daag, starring Rajesh Khanna, in which he acted as a prosecuting attorney. He was a prolific actor and screenwriter in Hindi cinema in the period late 1970s to 90s and wrote dialogues for 200 films. Born in Afghanistan, Khan graduated from Ismail Yusuf College affiliated to Bombay University. Before entering the film industry in the early 1970s, he taught at M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering, Mumbai, as a professor of civil engineering.

Nastik (transl. Atheist) is a 1983 Indian Hindi-language action drama film produced by Vinod Doshi and directed by Pramod Chakravorty. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Pran, Deven Verma, Sarika, Amjad Khan, Aruna Irani, Madan Puri, Bhagwan Dada, Nalini Jaywant, Rita Bhaduri, Lalita Pawar, Bob Christo, and Tom Alter. The soundtrack was scored and composed by Kalyanji Anandji, and the songs were written by Anand Bakshi. It was the last film to pair Bachchan and Malini before they made a comeback 20 years later in Baghban (2003). The film was a moderate success at the box office.

Kajal Kiran is a former Indian actress and model, who is known for her work in Hindi films. Kiran made her debut starring in the film Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) and promptly established herself as a stable actress in Hindi cinema, appearing in over 40 films over a career spanning 13 years.

Jaani Dost is a 1983 Indian Hindi-language action film, produced by C. Ashwini Dutt, M. Arjuna Raju under the Roja Art Productions banner and directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. It stars Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Parveen Babi, Sridevi, with music composed by Bappi Lahiri. The film was simultaneously made along with the Telugu-language movie Adavi Simhalu, starring Krishna, Krishnam Raju, Sridevi, Jaya Prada in the pivotal roles. Both movies were made simultaneously by the same producer and director, some of the scenes and actors are identical in the two.

<i>Himmatwala</i> (1983 film) 1983 Indian film

Himmatwala is a 1983 Indian Hindi-language action comedy film, produced by G. A. Sheshagiri Rao under the Padmalaya Studios banner, presented by Krishna and directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. A remake of the Telugu film Ooruki Monagadu (1981), the film stars Jeetendra and Sridevi in lead roles. Himmatwala on release was a giant commercial success, grossing 5 crore, becoming one of the highest grossing Hindi films of 1980s. The film proved to be a breakthrough for Sridevi in Bollywood and launched her to stardom. Her dance number "Naino Mein Sapna" became a rage with Rediff stating that "the water pots may have dominated most frames in 'Naino Mein Sapna', but it was Sridevi's bejewelled outfits and headgears that stole the show".

Indian actress Sridevi made her debut as a child in the 1967 Tamil film Kandhan Karunai at the age of four, and began playing lead roles as a child in M. A. Thirumugam’s 1969 mythological Tamil film Thunaivan. Her first role as an on-screen adult came in 1976 at age 13, in the Tamil film Moondru Mudichu. She then starred in 16 Vayathinile (1977) which proved to be a major breakthrough for Sridevi. Following this she appeared in the critically acclaimed thriller Sigappu Rojakkal (1978) and the satirical drama Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980), establishing herself as a leading female star of South Indian Cinema. Subsequently, she played a woman who suffers from Amnesia in the critically and commercially successful classic Moondram Pirai (1982). She also achieved success by starring as a female lead in the successful dramas Padaharella Vayasu (1978), Meendum Kokila (1981), Premabhishekam (1981), Vazhvey Maayam (1982) and Aakhari Poratam (1988).

<i>Justice Chaudhury</i> 1983 Indian film

Justice Chaudhury is a 1983 Hindi film, produced by G.A. Seshagiri Rao under the Padmalaya Studios banner, presented by Krishna and directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. The film stars Jeetendra, Sridevi, Hema Malini, Moushumi Chatterjee and music composed by Bappi Lahiri. The film is a remake of Telugu movie Justice Chowdary (1982), which also stars Sridevi in the same role.
