Assam is a state in northeastern India, south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. Assam covers an area of 78,438 km2 (30,285 sq mi). It is the second largest state in northeastern India by area and the largest in terms of population. The state is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north; Nagaland and Manipur to the east; Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west via the Siliguri Corridor, a 22-kilometre-wide (14 mi) strip of land that connects the state to the rest of India. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Jahnu Barua</span> Indian film director

Jahnu Barua is an Indian film director. He has written and directed a number of Assamese and Hindi films. Some of his notable films are Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (1987), Firingoti (1992), Xagoroloi Bohu Door (1995), Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara (2005), Konikar Ramdhenu (2003), Baandhon (2012), and Ajeyo (2014).

Paresh Baruah, also known by aliases Paresh Asom and Kamruj Zaman Khan, is an Indian separatist militant who is the army chief of the ULFA, which is seeking Independence for Assam from the Indian Union. He is the vice-chairperson and the commander-in-chief of the United Liberation Front of Assam – Independent. Baruah lives in Yunnan, China where he receives funding and patronage from MSS. He has also insisted that Han Chinese are friends of the Assamese and want to help them become independent, even though his influence has largely diminished.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Khagen Mahanta</span> Indian singer

Khagen Mahanta was a singer and composer of folk and traditional music of Assam. Khagen Mahanta was a notable person in Assamese folk music and known as the "King of Bihu". His Bihu songs, Borgeet and other folk songs remain popular in Assam. The artist, along with his wife Archana Mahanta and son Angaraag Mahanta who is known as Papon, represent one of the most influential families in Assamese music. He died on 12 June 2014.

Zerifa Wahid is an Indian actress known for her works in Assamese films. Her prominent features include Baandhon, which won the 60th National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Assamese directed by Jahnu Baruah. and the best film in the Indian Films Competition held at the Bengaluru International Film Festival for the year 2012.

<i>Jetuka Pator Dore</i> 2011 Indian film

Jetuka Pator Dore is a 2011 Indian Assamese drama film based on the novel of the same name by Syed Abdul Malik. The film stars Aimee Baruah and Raag Oinitom, was directed by Jadumoni Dutta and produced by Noorul Sultan for Maina Industrial Co-Operative Society Ltd. The storyline is set to the backdrop of an interior village of Assam, India in the 1970s, which has never seen progress and prosperity, and tells the story of Radha, a young woman of lower caste fighting against corruption and for the rights of her community.

<i>Dwaar</i> 2013 Indian film

Dwaar is a 2013 Indian Assamese drama film directed by Bidyut Chakravarty, with his own screenplay, and produced by Sanjive Narain and Bidyut Chakravarty himself. It was adapted from the Assamese short story Bahiroloi Jowa Baat by Apurba Sarma. Dwaar stars Kapil Bora, Zerifa Wahid and Mahika Sharma in the lead roles. The literal translation of the title means Door.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Papon (singer)</span> Indian playback singer

Angaraag Mahanta, known by his stagename Papon, is an Indian playback singer and composer from Assam. Papon has also sung in many languages apart from Assamese like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Marathi. He is the lead vocalist and founder of the folk-fusion band Papon and The East India Company. He is the son of the noted Assamese singer Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Beauty Sharma Barua</span> Indian singer

Beauty Sharma Barua is a singer from Assam, India. She is one of the best-known and most respected Assamese folk music, Indian classical music, ghazal and bhajan singers of Assam. More popularly known as The Melody Queen of Assam and Beauty Baideu, she has recorded over a thousand songs for All India Radio, Doordarshan, albums and others. She has sung songs in over six regional Indian languages, though primarily in Assamese and Hindi. Beauty Barua married renowned writer and lyricist Dwijendra Mohan Sharma (1948–2006), called the Man with Melody in His Pen by The Daily Telegraph, in 1976.

Urmila Mahanta is an Indian actress. A student of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Mahanta appeared in various plays, short films and television series, before making her feature film debut in the critically acclaimed 2012 Tamil crime thriller Vazhakku Enn 18/9. She has acted in Hindi, Assamese, Bengali and Malayalam films.

Khandkar Mohammad Adil Hussain is an Indian actor who is known for his work in several Indian independent and mainstream film productions, as well as international cinema, in films such as The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Life of Pi . He received National Film Awards at the 2017 National Film Awards for Hotel Salvation and Maj Rati Keteki.

Jilmil Jonak is a 2014 Indian Assamese language drama film starring Jatin Bora and Nishita Goswami in the lead roles. The film was directed by Sibanan Boruah and produced under the banner of Daijee Cine Productions by Daijee Gogoi and written by Horen Chandra Rajkhowa, released on 30 May 2014.

Jupitora Bhuyan is an Indian actress works in the Assamese films. She worked in a few Assamese films along with VCD films and telefilms. She is also part of Assamese mobile theatre industry debut by playing lead female roles in Kohinoor Theatre. She is especially known for playing extraordinary character with a powerful appearance.

<i>Ajeyo</i> 2014 film

Ajeyo is a 2014 Assamese language drama film directed by Jahnu Barua; based on the Sahitya Akademi Award winner 1997 Assamese novel Ashirbador Rong written by Arun Sharma and adapted as screenplay by the director himself. It was produced by Shankar Lall Goenka and stars Rupam Chetia and Jupitora Bhuyan in the lead roles. The film was released on 3 January 2014.

Rajni Basumatary is an Indian filmmaker and actress, best known for her role of Mary Kom's mother in the 2014 Hindi film Mary Kom. Basumatary has written and produced the highly acclaimed feature film Anurag. Her directorial debut Raag was released in all major cities in India in 2014.

Satish Chandra Kakati was an Indian journalist, writer, the editor of The Assam Tribune, an Assam based English-language daily, and one of the founders of Assam Bani, a vernacular weekly started in 1955 by The Assam Tribune group. He was the vice president of the Editors' Guild of India and authored seven books in Assamese and English. A 2005 recipient of the Kanaklata Barua and Mukunda Kakati Memorial Award, Kakati was awarded the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1991.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Archana Mahanta</span> Indian folk singer (1949–2020)

Archana Mahanta was a renowned folk singer from Assam, India. Archana Mahanta and her late husband Khagen Mahanta had an enormous contribution in popularising and preserving Assamese folk music. The musical couple often performed together, singing many duet hits.
