Catlins Conservation Park is a protected area in the Otago region of New Zealand, covering 53,041 hectares in The Catlins, within the Clutha District. [1]

History

The park was established in 1975. [1]

It was included in the 1080 pest control programme in 2014. [4]

The body of missing Dunedin man Stephen Lowe was found in the park in September 2017 by a librarian and her dog. [5] [6]

In January 2019, local MP Sarah Dowie proposed converting the park into a national park. [7]

The New Zealand Women's Land Army was formed to supply New Zealand's agriculture during the Second World War, with a function similar to its British namesake. The organisation was originally formed in 1940. City girls from the age of 17 and up were "sent to assist on sheep, cattle, dairy, orchard and poultry properties" in response to labour shortages due to the mobilisation of male farm workers. In 1942, the organisation was renamed the New Zealand Women's Land Service. A total of 2,711 women served throughout the war; this made it the largest of the women's services raised by New Zealand during the war. It was disbanded in 1946, following the end of the war.

Southland is an electorate to the New Zealand House of Representatives. It was first created for the 2020 New Zealand general election and has since then been held by Joseph Mooney of the National Party.
