National Judicial Academy for Judicial education and training was a significant initiative of the Supreme Court of India conceived in early 1990s. The National Judicial Academy was formally dedicated to the Nation on 5 September 1992. The Academy, spread over a sprawling 62 acre campus, atop a hillock, overlooking the Upper Lake at Bhopal represents a stimulating, inspirational and solemn architectural ambience.


Registered as a Society in 1993 under the Societies Registration Act (1860), the Academy is managed by a Governing Council chaired by the Chief Justice of India; and comprising two senior most Judges of the Supreme Court, three Secretaries to the Government of India in the departments of Law and Justice, Finance, and Legal Affairs.


Under the Memorandum of the Society, the mandated objectives of the Academy include;


1. To establish a center of excellence in the study, research and training of court management and administration of justice and to suggest improvements to the judicial system;

2. To provide training and continuing legal education to judicial officers and ministerial officers of the courts; and

3. To disseminate information relating to judicial administration, publish research papers, books, monographs, journals etc. and collaborate with other institutions both within the country and abroad.


The seminal emphasis being to strengthen the administration of justice through judicial education, research and policy development and towards achievement of these goals, the Academy strives to:

1. Deliver judicial education and training for judges, court staff and other stakeholders in the administration of justice oriented towards addressing national priorities in justice administration;

2. Carry out studies/research on the administration of justice and court management and suggest improvements;

3. Generate and disseminate knowledge on the administration of justice and court management;

4. Promote highest standards of professional competence and practice amongst judicial officers and court staff;

5. Integrate state of the art information and communications technologies calibrated to functioning of court systems for ensuring transparency, enhancing excellence and accelerating the process of speedy justice delivery; and

6. Make the NJA a world class center of excellence in judicial education, training and knowledge in judicial science in India and abroad.

Judicial education as justice delivery, is ever a work in progress. Jurisprudence and technology are constantly evolving. This dynamic invites constant revision of administrative practices, employment of contemporaneous technology relevant to court management; upgrading infrastructure for integrating available technology; and updating knowledge, of substantive and procedural dimensions of law to meet societal aspirations of the now and the morrow. The National Judicial Academy is equipped and constantly endeavors to meet public expectations.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Judicial Appointments Commission</span> Failed proposal for an Indian legal body

The National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) was a proposed body which would have been responsible for the recruitment, appointment and transfer of judicial officers, legal officers and legal employees under the government of India and in all state governments of India. The commission was established by amending the Constitution of India through the 99th constitution amendment with the Constitution (Ninety-Ninth Amendment) Act, 2014 or 99th Constitutional Amendment Act-2014 passed by the Lok Sabha on 13 August 2014 and by the Rajya Sabha on 14 August 2014. The NJAC would have replaced the collegium system for the appointment of judges as invoked by the Supreme court via judicial fiat by a new system. Along with the Constitution Amendment Act, the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act, 2014, was also passed by the Parliament of India to regulate the functions of the National Judicial Appointments Commission. The NJAC Bill and the Constitutional Amendment Bill, was ratified by 16 of the state legislatures in India, and subsequently assented by the President of India Pranab Mukherjee on 31 December 2014. The NJAC Act and the Constitutional Amendment Act came into force from 13 April 2015.

The e-Courts project was conceptualized on the basis of the National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) in the Indian Judiciary–2005 submitted by e-Committee, with a vision to transform the Indian Judiciary by ICT enablement of Courts. In other words, the e-Court project is all about providing ICT enablement of courts to make the justice delivery system affordable and cost-effective. The e-Courts Integrated Mission Mode Project (Phase-I) is one of the national e-Governance projects being implemented in High Courts and district/subordinate Courts of the Country. The Government approved the computerization of 14,249 district & subordinate Courts under the project by March 2014 with a total budget of Rs. 935 crore. The objective of the e-Courts project is to provide designated services to litigants, lawyers, and the judiciary by universal computerization of district and subordinate courts in the country and enhancement of ICT enablement of the justice system.

The Kyber Pakhtunkhwa Judicial Academy is an institution of higher learning in Peshawar, Pakistan which focuses on legal and judicial studies. Its mission is "to change the attitude of young law graduates as judges and to inculcate in them patience, sobriety, confidence, discipline and skill of high quality legal reasoning; to develop their capacity; to enable them to create harmony among all justice sector institutions; to sensitize them to the rights of all litigant public, notably, of the vulnerable communities; and to make them leaders to contribute to the rule of law.

The National Judicial College (NJC) was established in 1963 as an entity within the American Bar Association. The NJC moved to the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno in 1964 and became a Nevada not-for-profit (501)(c)(3) educational corporation in 1977. The NJC provides judicial training to judges from across the United States.

Gopi Chand Bharuka (1941-2018) was the former chairman of E-Committee constituted by the Government of India for the period of 3 years from January 2005 to January 2008. He retired as the acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka.

Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu is a Ghanaian judge. He is an active Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana. He has been on the bench in Ghana since 1996 and became a Supreme Court judge in 2022.
