Kilburn High Road is a London Overground station on the Lioness line, situated near the south end of the Kilburn High Road in the London Borough of Camden.
Kilburn High Road railway station was opened in 1852 as Kilburn and Maida Vale station by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) on its existing line out of Euston station, to serve the newly developed suburbs of Kilburn and Maida Vale to the south. In the Victorian era it became an important commuter station served by North London Railway trains running into Broad Street station.
At the beginning of the 20th century the station had platforms on all four lines of the West Coast Main Line out of Euston, but with the construction of the Watford DC line the local service took over the slow main line platforms, the slow (semi-fast) main line services were diverted through what had been the fast main line platforms and the fast main lines were moved southward.
In 1915 Kilburn Park tube station was opened a little to the south on the Bakerloo Line extension from Paddington, drawing its passengers from a similar catchment area to Kilburn High Road station and providing a quicker connection with the West End.
The slow (previously fast) main line platforms were almost entirely demolished during the electrification of the West Coast Main Line, with the last platform building disappearing in the 1980s when the LNWR platform canopies were removed. The current footbridge and street-level buildings are not so much the result of modernisation but of three or four major fires which have occurred here since the early 1970s.

The station is occasionally used as a reversing point on the London Underground network by out-of-service Bakerloo line trains when they cannot enter the LU platforms at Queens Park station due to planned engineering work or failures, and/or are prevented from reversing in the Up DC line platform there. The fourth rail (bonded to the traction current return rail) continues towards Kilburn High Road to permit these movements, but the carrying of passengers to Kilburn High Road by LU tube trains is not permitted as the platform height is matched to Network Rail trains (platforms on this line north of Queens Park station are positioned at a "transition" height which is higher than that for normal LU platforms and lower than NR platforms). There are also one or two "rusty rail" journeys made by LU trains each day to keep the fourth rail clean for the relatively infrequent unscheduled diverted LU trains. Kilburn High Road appears on non-public internal London Underground (LU) maps and documents for this purpose. [2] [3]
London Buses routes 16, 31, 32, 98, 206, 316, 328 and 632 and night routes N28, N31, N32 and N98 serve the station.
The Metropolitan line, colloquially known as the Met, is a London Underground line between Aldgate in the City of London and Amersham and Chesham in Buckinghamshire, with branches to Watford in Hertfordshire and Uxbridge in Hillingdon. Printed in magenta on the tube map, the line is 41.4 miles (66.7 km) in length and serves 34 stations. Between Aldgate and Finchley Road, the track is mostly in shallow "cut and cover" tunnels, apart from short sections at Barbican and Farringdon stations. The rest of the line is above ground, with a loading gauge of a similar size to those on main lines. Just under 94 million passenger journeys were made on the line in 2019.
The Bakerloo line is a London Underground line that runs from Harrow & Wealdstone in suburban north-west London to Elephant & Castle in south London, via the West End. Printed in brown on the Tube map, it serves 25 stations, 15 of which are underground, over 23.2 kilometres (14.4 mi). It runs partly on the surface and partly through deep-level tube tunnels.
Euston railway station is a major central London railway terminus managed by Network Rail in the London Borough of Camden. It is the southern terminus of the West Coast Main Line, the UK's busiest inter-city railway. Euston is the tenth-busiest station in Britain and the country's busiest inter-city passenger terminal, being the gateway from London to the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales and Scotland.
Edgware Road is a major road in London, England. The route originated as part of Roman Watling Street and, unusually in London, it runs for 10 miles (16 km) in an almost perfectly straight line. Forming part of the modern A5 road, Edgware Road undergoes several name changes along its length, including Maida Vale, Kilburn High Road, Shoot Up Hill and Cricklewood Broadway; but the road is, as a whole, known as the Edgware Road, as it is the road to Edgware.
Queen's Park is an interchange station situated on the Bakerloo line of the London Underground and the Lioness line of the London Overground. It lies at the southern end of Salusbury Road, near the south-east corner of the public park from which the area now known as Queen's Park has taken its modern name. The station is in Travelcard Zone 2.
Willesden Junction is an interchange station located in Harlesden, north-west London. It is situated on the Bakerloo line of the London Underground and the Lioness and Mildmay lines of the London Overground. The station is located close to the Old Oak Lane conservation area in the East Acton ward.
Wembley Central is an interchange station in Wembley, north-west London. It is situated on the east-west High Road and is near to both Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena. South Kenton is an interchange station in Kenton, north-west London. The station is served by suburban services on the Bakerloo line of the London Underground and the Lioness line of the London Overground. The station lies between Kenton and North Wembley stations. It is located between The Link in the Sudbury Court Estate of North Wembley, and Windermere Grove in Kenton, in the Wembley postal area.
Harrow & Wealdstone is an interchange station located in Harrow and Wealdstone in the London Borough of Harrow. It is situated on the Bakerloo line of the London Underground, of which it is the northern terminus; the Lioness line of the London Overground; and on the West Coast main line (WCML) for National Rail services operated by London Northwestern Railway and Southern.
Euston Square is a London Underground station at the corner of Euston Road and Gower Street, just north of University College London – its main (south) entrance faces the tower of University College Hospital. The multi-interchange Euston station is beyond Euston Square Gardens, which is one street east. The station is between Great Portland Street and King's Cross St Pancras stations on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines in Travelcard Zone 1.
Watford Junction is a railway station serving the town of Watford in Hertfordshire, England. The station is on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), 17 miles 34 chains (28 km) from London Euston and the Abbey Line, a branch line to St Albans. It is also the northern terminus of the Lioness line of the London Overground, which operates via the Watford DC line into central London.
The LNWR electric units were ordered by the London and North Western Railway for its suburban services in London. The first cars, made with Siemens equipment, arrived in 1914, and these were followed by two larger batches of units with Oerlikon equipment. The trains were formed into 3-car units, with first and third class accommodation in open saloons. Following the 1923 grouping and absorption of the line into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), similar LMS electric units, but with accommodation in compartments, were purchased to run with the Oerlikon units in 1926 and 1932. The trains were all withdrawn by 1960.
South Hampstead is a London Overground station on the Lioness line, situated on Loudoun Road in the London Borough of Camden. It is about 550 yards (500 m) south west of Swiss Cottage Underground station.
Hatch End is a London Overground station on the Lioness line, situated in the London Borough of Harrow in north London. It is located in Travelcard Zone 6. The station was formerly served by the Bakerloo line of the London Underground from 16 April 1917 until 24 September 1982.
Milton Keynes Central railway station serves Milton Keynes and surrounding parts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire (England). The station is located on the West Coast Main Line about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London. Bushey is an interchange station in Hertfordshire which serves Bushey and Oxhey. It is located on an embankment where the Watford DC line, operated as the Lioness line of the London Overground, diverges from the West Coast Main Line (WCML). National Rail services along the WCML are operated by London Northwestern Railway.
Watford High Street is a station on the Lioness line of the London Overground, located in the centre of Watford, Hertfordshire. It is the only station on the sole deviation of the Watford DC line away from the West Coast Main Line, situated between Bushey and Watford Junction stations.
The Watford DC line is a suburban railway line from London Euston to Watford Junction in Greater London and Hertfordshire. Its services are operated by London Overground for the whole length of the line and the Bakerloo line of the London Underground between Harrow & Wealdstone and Queen's Park.
The Baker Street and Waterloo Railway (BS&WR), also known as the Bakerloo tube, was a railway company established in 1893 that built a deep-level underground "tube" railway in London. The company struggled to fund the work, and construction did not begin until 1898. In 1900, work was hit by the financial collapse of its parent company, the London & Globe Finance Corporation, through the fraud of Whitaker Wright, its main shareholder. In 1902, the BS&WR became a subsidiary of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL) controlled by American financier Charles Yerkes. The UERL quickly raised the funds, mainly from foreign investors.
There were a number of proposals to build an underground railway along the Edgware Road in north-west London, England, at the end of the 19th century. Each scheme envisaged building some form of rail tunnel under Edgware Road towards Victoria railway station.
