List of Democrats who opposed the Joe Biden 2024 presidential campaign

Last updated

In the lead-up to the 2024 United States presidential election, there was doubt about Joe Biden's ability to run for re-election. [1] Before announcing his reelection campaign, he was facing historically low approval ratings, [2] [3] and several polls showed a majority of Democratic voters did not want him to run. [4] [5]

Contents

On April 25, 2023, Biden announced his 2024 candidacy to mixed reactions, though most Democratic voters said they would support his campaign. [6] In October, dissent from other Democrats grew following his response to the Hamas-led attack on Israel and the subsequent U.S. support for Israel in the Israel–Hamas war. [7]

As the 2024 Democratic primaries began, Muslim leaders and anti-war activists led Israel–Hamas war protest vote movements, urging Democrats to write-in or vote uncommitted. [8] On March 12, despite challenges from U.S. representative Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson, among others, Biden won enough delegates to become the presumptive nominee and finished the primaries with almost all the delegates. [9] [10]

After his poorly received performance in the first presidential debate on June 27, there was speculation that Biden might end his campaign. [11] Concerns about Biden's age existed before the debate, but they increased after the debate. [12] With less than two months before the Democratic National Convention, elected officials, donors, and celebrities began to call for Biden to drop out of the race. [13] On July 21, Biden announced that he would no longer be seeking re-election. [14]

As part of the Israel–Hamas war protests in the United States, protest vote movements in the 2024 Democratic Party presidential primaries were initiated to target President Joe Biden's and Vice President Kamala Harris's reelection campaigns. After a notable "uncommitted" vote in Michigan, activists sought to replicate the protest in other states. While some activists under Abandon Biden/Abandon Harris argued against supporting the Democratic ticket entirely during the 2024 presidential election, others in uncommitted movements led by the Uncommitted National Movement urged to use uncommitted votes during the presidential primary to pressure the Biden administration to change policies before the presidential election. Both groups overlap and supported each other's goals, to the point of being considered "twin" movements. On July 21, 2024, Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential election and endorsed Harris as his replacement.

Former President and current President-elect Donald Trump, who is 78, raised concerns about his age during the 2024 presidential campaign, including his cognitive state, during and after the 2020 United States presidential election. These concerns increased after a poor performance by Biden during a debate against Trump in the 2024 presidential election, which led a number of commentators and some Democratic lawmakers to call for Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. He later withdrew his candidacy while stating that he would continue serving as president until the conclusion of his term.
